Bibbidi Bobbidi BAbip

Batting Average on balls put into play (BAbip) is a pitcher's batting average allowed on batted balls ending a plate appearance with the exception of home runs. Some say that BAbip is mostly the product of the defense behind a pitcher and luck - rather than some sign of a pitcher's skill. Related, many feel that pitchers with an abnormally high or low BAbip are destined to see their results regress to the mean. On average, overall, it's reasonable to see a BAbip around .300.

This particular stat also reflects how well a pitcher can manipulate a batter -- how well the pitcher can induce a batter to hit toward a certain fielder, or area of the field. For example, Miguel Cuellar and Dave McNally both seemed to induce a LOT of batters to hit grounders toward left -- a literal hitters graveyard hen you consider the chances of successfully hitting anything past Brooks Robinson, Mark Belanger or Luis Aparacio.

Wade LeBlanc, #12 on the 2nd list, has an ERA of 1.16 despite a BAbip of .368; if that BAbip regresses toward the mean, he'll be pitching nothing but shutouts. Ryan Rowland-Smith, #14 on the 1st list, would appear to be the anti-LeBlanc.

You can get good results with a high BABIP if you pick off more than one runner per start, as LeBlanc has done.
