Site Features: Added BABIP to Pitching Season Finder as Additional Criteria

Posted by Neil Paine on December 27, 2010

Last week, Adam from Lonestarball.com pointed out that while we offered Batting Average on Balls In Play (BABIP) as a sorting option in the Pitching Season Finder, we didn't include it as an option under "Additional Criteria". We're happy to say now that Sean has fixed this, and BABIP is currently available to use in the criteria drop-downs as well as the "sort by" option, giving you potential queries like this:

For single seasons, For 2010, (requiring batting_avg_bip>=.320 and At least 100 Innings Pitched), sorted by smallest Earned Run Average

Maybe Liriano didn't quite recapture his rookie glory after all, eh?

  2. Neil Paine Says:

Actually, I think it's rather remarkable he had 3.62 ERA despite the unlucky .335 BABIP (using FIP, he deserved something like a 2.70 ERA last year). Assuming his BABIP regresses toward .300 next season, he could be in for a strong 2011.

  3. PhilsPhan Says:

Does BABIP include home runs? Or is a HR 'out of play'?

  4. Johnny Twisto Says:

    No HR.

(Hits minus HR) divided by (AB plus SF minus HR minus K).

You could also include SH in the denominator, I suppose, depending on what you are trying to measure, but the formula above is apparently the one B-R uses.

  5. B-R now allows you to search pitcher seasons by BABIP - Texas Rangers Baseball Blog Says:
