Trivia time: Games with 3 HR and a SB

Posted by Andy on February 15, 2008

Since 1957, there have been 11 games where one player had at least 3 homers and at least 1 stolen base in the same game. Only one player has done it twice. NAME THAT PLAYER!

Without further delay, here is the full list:

There are a couple of very surprising names on there, and I don't think I need to specifically point them out to you.

Oh Eric the Red, what could you have done in MLB if not for all the injuries?

  1. David in Toledo Says:

There are 10 games in which a batter hit 2 home runs and stole 2 bases -- but no one did it twice.

There are 8 games in which a batter hit for the cycle and also stole a base -- but no one did it twice. (one player, batting 9th, stole 2 bases in his "cycle" game -- and he was a catcher.)

On each of these 3 lists, there are 3 (different) players who are either in the HofF or will be (probably, who can predict?) elected soon.

  2. spartanbill Says:

I ran the reciprocal report and found that there were 38 instances of a player stealing 3+ bases in games they homered in.

Rickey Henderson did it 4 times. Campaneris, Roberta Kelly, Lofton, Mays and Raines each did it twice.

Both Raines games were in May of 1981.

Lofton had the only game with a HR and 5 SBs, He laso had a 4 SB game as did Crawford, Henderson (twice) Coleman, Kelly and Mays.

Lofton had the only 5 SB ame with a homer

  3. wboenig2 Says:

There have been seven occasions where a substitute player stole three bases in a game. One player -- Otis Nixon -- did it twice.

But a more impressive event may have been the game that Art Shamsky had on August 12, 1966. On that day, he entered the game in the 8th inning and proceeded to hit three home runs before the game was over.

That's funny, David, I was just looking at cycles yesterday (Re: 1. above). Charlie Moore was the one with 2 SB. There have been 130 since 1957 (107 in 9 innings or less). 22 times the player also got a BB, 5 times a ROE, never a HBP. There were 3 cycles in 7 days in 1970.

Here are five trivia questions about cycles (1957-2007):

    1. Who are the oldest and youngest to hit for a cycle?
    2. What is the largest number of cycles by a player (9 different people tie for this record), and who had the longest time between first and last cycle?
    3. What was the most hits in a game with a cycle, and who was it? This instance also had the most times on base.
    4. What starting fielding position has the most cycles?
    5. What place in the batting order has the most cycles?

Regarding the last two, one is fairly obvious, but the other was very surprising (to me, anyway).

Answers to be posted later for those without encyclopedic memories (like me!) or PI privileges.

    OK, trivia answers are:

    1. Dave Winfield, 39y264d and Cesar Cedeno, 21y159d.

    2. 2; George Brett's were 13y58d apart.

    3. Rondell White had 6 hits in his cycle game on June 11, 1995 (also 6 times on base).

    4. 1B, with 23 cycles! This surprised me. Next were CF(20), LF(18), SS(17), 3B(15), RF(14), 2B(12), C(6), DH(5). The last two are NOT surprising.

    5. 3rd, with 29. Next were 1st(25), 2nd(18), 4th(16), 5th(15), 6th(13), 7th(6), 8th(5), 9th(3).
