Doubling up on 1B, 2B, 3B

Posted by Andy on April 26, 2010

In Saturday's Twins/Royals game, both Joe Mauer and David DeJesus had a single, a double, and a triple. (Actually Mauer had 3 singles, but who's counting?)

This marked a fairly rare occasion in which more than one player in the same game got at least these three types of hit. Before you ask it--there has never been a game in which two players successfully hit for the cycle.

Here are the games (among the years 1920-1939 and 1952-present) with the most different players getting at least a single, double, and triple:

That's right--3 players once did it in the same game. They were Joe Judge and Duffy Lewis of the Sentaors and Ty Cobb of the Tigers. Want to hear something crazy though? Two other Tigers players, Chick Shorten and Bert Cole, each had a double and triple in that game as well but failed to single.

As you can guess, I terminated the list above at the year 2000. In all, there have been 100 games in the years covered in the box scores in which 2 players got all 3 types of hit.

Incidentally, here are the last 10 times the 2 players were from the same team:

In that Baltimore game last year (and definitely others on the list as well) one of the players, Felix Pie actually hit for the cycle. His teammate Cesar Izuris got the other 1B, 2B, 3B game but didn't homer.

That's pretty cool. In the 1921 game, both teams also had 4 triples. That's one of only 2 times that's happened since 1920, with the other game being in August of 1921, Browns-Senators, with Joe Judge tripling in both.
