A-Rod vs Angels

On the FOX telecast of the Yankees-Angels game, they just mentioned how A-Rod has 70 HR against the Angels.
Here are his split against all teams, minimum 30 games (thus eliminating most NL teams):

So, yeah, A-Rod has worn out the Angels with by far the most home runs and his highest OPS-against. Those numbers are pretty insane--in just a bit over a season's worth of games he has 67 HR and 154 RBI. Nice.
Incidentally, the discrepancy between what was said on TV (70 HR) and the numbers above (67 HR) are the 3 homers he hit in the ALCS against them last year.
By the way, I had no idea that Eric Karros had a lisp. He's a pretty good commentator--exactly what I like from former players. He's knowledgeable about hitting, the umpires, and the managers and he's sharing small relevant nuggets as the game moves along.

The current pitcher against whom A-Rod has the lowest OPS in a significant number of at-bats is today's Angels starter Joel Piñeiro. Going into today's game A-Rod had 30 AB against Piñeiro with 4 hits, including one double and one RBI, one walk and 10 strikeouts, with a sacrifice fly and a HBP. That's a .133/.188/.167 slash line (.354 OPS). So what happens? A-Rod gets a single and scores a run in three at-bats against Piñeiro, striking out once, and the rest of the Yankee lineup abuses Piñeiro for 6 ER and 10 hits in six innings.
Piñeiro had done quite well against the Yankees before today's start — 3-3, 3.22 ERA, 1.266 WHIP in 17 career appearances (nine starts), 72.2 IP, 25 BB, 55 SO. The only AL club against whom he has posted better numbers is the Tigers (7-2, 2.40 in 75.0 IP). On the other hand, over his career Piñeiro's ERA in day games is nearly a run higher than in night games (4.95 to 4.10). (All credit to B-Ref's Splits page.) So you've got the pitcher you want against a team and its superstar hitter that he handles well, but in a game setting where he generally gets poor results. Today the game setting seems to have been the controlling factor, ¿no?

The White Sox seem to have figured out how to pitch to ARod.
