Red Sox lose fifth straight stadium-opening game

Posted by Andy on April 13, 2010

From MLB.com, when the Red Sox lost to the Twins yesterday in the first game at Target Field, it was the fifth straight time that the Red Sox lost the first official game played in a new stadium.

The previous 4 occasions were 1923 in the original Yankee Stadium, 1911 in Griffith Stadium, 1909 in Shibe Park, and 1901 in Oriole Park.

Across those 5 games, David Ortiz was 1-for-19 with 13 strikeouts.

Ok, ok, I made that last part up.

Fifth straight game as a visitor. The Red Sox beat the Highlanders 7-6 in the Fenway opener on April, 20, 1912.

David Ortiz hit two homers in that game.

You're right David...1912 WAS the last time Ortiz homered.

I'm pretty sure Jamie Moyer started that game.

  4. Gabby Hartnett Says:

No, he really was 1 for 19, but it was 16 strikeouts. And that was one of his better series!

  5. Zachary Says:

    Props for the Hartnett joke.

  6. Mike Says:

I do recall that he was known as David Arias back in 1912.
