Astros trade for Miguel Tejada
Posted by Andy on December 12, 2007
It's hard to believe the Astros were in the World Series a few years ago because they are terrible now. Today, they just got a lot worse.
Playing in Oriole Park, Tejada was able to hide the fact that his offensive production has slipped significantly. But just look at his recent home/road splits. In 2007 he had an OPS of .859 at home and .734 on the road. In 2006, it was .958 at home and .798 on the road. In 2005, it was .925 at home and .809 on the road.
Now he's not going to have the benefit of a great hitter's park for half his games. Go to his main B-R page and neutralize his stats. Last year, under neutral conditions, he hit .294, but with just a .797 OPS, 18 HR, 77 RBI, and 68 runs scored. And the Astros just gave up the farm for this guy...

I was baffled when you mentioned Camden Yards being a hitter's park (it usually favors pitchers slightly, despite its reputation), but it sure was a hitter's park last year.
Ah well, everyone loses on this one. The Astros trade away the future, while the Orioles have new prospects to ruin. Sometimes, you just have to laugh.

And one wonders if Tejada's name is going to be on Mitchell's steroids report when it goes public tomorrow afternoon.

A meager search on my part hasn't turned up a list of park effects, but how is Houston not a great hitters park for righties? Doesn't it have the shortest left field porch in baseball?

Neutralizing Tejada's numbers for 2007 Astros yields an OPS of .811 with 18 HR and 81 RBI.

As an Astros fan, this sickens me. I see dark days ahead if Wade keeps this up -- I thought Lidge was salvagable, and this is just a disaster. I was really looking forward to seeing Troy Patton develop after what was seen of him last year, but I guess I don't have that luxury anymore.
If Tejada is on the Mitchell Report, I might have to break things.

Come on Wade, you couldn't have waited one more day? You might've even gotten him for less!

In light of the Mitchell Report, do you think the Astros will move to void the trade?

No, I think the Astros made the trade knowing full well that Tejada would be on the list.
