Pittsburgh, 1993-2007

Posted by Chris J. on November 23, 2007

The Pirates have had 15 straight losing seasons.  Let's look up stuff about them in that stretch.

Best game scores.  Only three times over 90 in  over 2400 games.  In all baseball, there have been 219 such starts in those years.

Meanwhile, they have a pair under 0 and a third on zero.  All baseball has had 94 under and 17 more at zero.

That's not SO bad, is it? Since 1993, MLB has had about 29 teams on average, so that's roughly 7 game scores over 90 per team. PIT at 3 is obviously below average, but it's such a rare event that I'm not sure it's meaningful. And they've had 3 game scores of zero or less, whereas an average team has had nearly 4.

No doubt they've been an awful franchise since those 3 straight NL East crowns in 1990-1992, but I'm not sure the game scores are the best measure.
