Most Ks: Pirate Pitchers
Posted by Chris J. on October 12, 2007
In baseball history, 448 men have struck out at least 1,000 batters in a season, but only six have done so with the Pirates. Even accounting for pitchers moving from team-to-team, that's pretty darn low.
It's even worse when you look at careers. Only three men have ever struck out 200 in a season - 19th century workhorse Ed Morris (who did it while throwing well over 500 IP in a year), former phenom Bob Veale, and Oliver Perez - who was better before and after his stay in Pittsburgh. Since 1969, Perez's 2004 is the only time any Pirate has done it. For perspective, from 1970-2007, 251 guys have struck out at least 200. That's so many, I need two save'n'share-its to make them all fit. Pittsburgh has had 38 squads in those years and there have been 1,024 teams total in that time. The Pirates should've had about 9 seasons where a guy struck out 200.
That's some serious finesse pitching they're producing in Pitt.

I think you mean "in their career". 🙂
