Most Runs in a Postseason Shutout

Posted by Raphy on October 18, 2009

The Phillies now lead the Dodgers 8-0 heading into the bottom of the seventh.  If that score holds it would be tied for the 13th biggest blowout in a postseason shutout. Here  the teams that scored at least 10 runs in a postseason game in which they shutout their opponent.:

Nine times in history, including 2 teams ('96 Atlanta and '60 Yankees) which managed it twice in the same series.  Also, out of the 9, three were game 7s and three were game 1s.

those '60 yanks outscored the pirates 55 to 27 in seven games.

  2. DoubleDiamond Says:

The above table doesn't show which teams were the home teams. I realized that game 5 and game 7 of the same NLCS would be in different cities. In fact, Atlanta scored 14 runs on the road and 15 runs at home. In other words, it took them nine offensive innings to put up 14 runs (and 2 of those runs did indeed come in the top of the ninth) but only eight to put up 15 runs.

Put the Phillies up there with the 5th, 6th, and 7th teams on the list. The final is 11-0.

    11-0, thank you victorino

  4. DavidRF Says:

Both of those 1960 Yankee shutouts were pitched by Whitey Ford. That was part of his consecutive scoreless innings streak.

  5. TheGoofyOne Says:

Those '96 Braves then carried it over to the first two games of the World Series, blowing out the Yankees...before losing four straight. Of the teams on that list, only the 1985 Royals and 1934 Cardinals won the World Series--and each of them only did it in that last game of a tough seven-game series.

  6. dave Says:

On the flip side, the last 4 occasions in which a team got shutout on 3 or fewer hits were all in game 3 of a series

  7. gerry Says:

The 1960 Yankees also beat the Pirates 16-3 in another game in the World Series. My mother said to me, they should save some of those runs, they might need them tomorrow. Mom knew whereof she spoke.

  8. MendozaLine Says:

Take out the 3 game 7s, in which the victor also won the series... In the other games, the team that had the large shutout were 1-5 in the series that they played, and the lone winner was the Braves who had won game 5 in the series where they had two huge shutouts...

The Cubs, Yankees, Brewers, and White Sox all lost...
