Most GIDP induced by a pitcher
Posted by Andy on August 17, 2009
(This is another stat that I saw on ESPN.com's mobile web site. They run some very interesting quick stats there--I can't link to it directly, but just check out ESPN.com on your mobile device if you want to see it.)
The records are coming fast and furious for Mark Buehrle. He recently became just the second pitcher since 1954 to induce 6 ground-ball double plays in a single game.
Here is the full list for everybody with at least 5 in a game.

In Spahn's game, he actually erased 5 of the 6 baserunners he allowed on DP's! He faced only one batter over the maximum despite giving up 4 hits and 2 walks! Of course, it was against the 3-14 1964 Mets.

Hockenbery is easily the most obscure pitcher on the list: 0-4 career record, only 4 career games started, all in 1975. His 8/8/75 appearance was in relief of Nolan Ryan and was the longest outing of his major-league career. Hockenbery, who signed with the Angels as an undrafted amateur free agent, probably wasn't destined for a long big-league career anyway -- once he advanced past A ball his K/BB ratio was always below 1.00 and his K/9 rate was always below 4.5. In 1975 he struck out only 15 in 41 innings (with 19 walks) and had a 1.26 ground-ball-to-fly-ball ratio. He was a fringe finesse pitcher.
I always get Hockenbery confused with another Angels pitcher, Bruce Heinbechner, a promising lefty who died in a preseason auto accident in 1974.
Ryan would make only two more starts before undergoing season-ending elbow surgery. He clearly wasn't himself on August 8; in his 2 1-3 innings he allowed four hits (including a homer), three walks and three stolen bases while committing a throwing error and a fielding error. He left with the score 4-0 Yankees. Hockenbery restored order in a big way, although the Angels wound up losing.
Two stats that capture how bad the '75 Angels were: 1) 55 team home runs for the season (no one hit more than six except team leader Lee Stanton, with 14). 2) Their shortstops turned 85% of the balls hit to them into outs, as compared with a league average of 93%. You can't overstate how important was the team's free-agent signing of Rick Burleson a few years later.
