and, of course, everybody's favorite:

Young, Frank, and Stynes (Reds' starting outfield)

I'm sure you can come up with some more, right?

I have heart trouble, that's one of the reasons I'm able to take my pants off at a ballpark, theater, or passenger jet.

Scary, indeed, Timmy. Way to get into the spirit.

Don Mossi rookie year 1.94 ERA and 6-1 his loss a typical 10.1 IP 1 ERA 4 hit GSC 84 . What great nicknames ears or sphinx followed it up in 1955 by having a 0.33 ERA in first 15 relief appearances 27 IP 1 ER 3 BS his runs/ER 7-1. What a scary presence on the mound of just turned dirt.

  9. BryanM Says:

Ossie Guillen inks 15 year deal with Fox - He will be sending steal and bunt signs to both teams on nationally televised games from a specially constructed bomb-proof shelter next to the 3rd base dugout. He will also conduct extensive post-game interviews. In an apparently unrelated move, MLB appoints Bud (Mugabe) Selig as Commissioner-for-life.

  40. bluejaysstatsgeek Says:

    @17,

Let's do an entire roster! How'd you like to manage this group of 2011 players?

    C Drew Butera (24)
    1B Aubrey Huff (90)
    2B Mark Ellis (82)
    3B Chone Figgins (39)
    SS Derek Jeter (97)
RF JD Drew (68) or Jason Werth (97) - You choose
    CF Alex Rios (65)
    LF Vernon Wells (83)
    4OF Milton Bradley (91)
    UT Mark Teahen (58)
    C Jeff Mathis (37)
    DH Adam Dunn (56)
    SP AJ Burnett (86)
    SP Ryan Dempster (81)
    SP Carlos Zambrano (81)
    SP John Lackey (66)
    SP Derek Lowe (75)
    RP Barry Zito (61)
    RP Joe Nathan (83)
    RP Jonathon Broxton (62)
    RP Fernando Rodney (85)
    RP Mike Gonzalez (91)
    CL Jon Rauch (88)

The numbers are 2011 OPS+ for batters and ERA+ for pitchers. In some cases, where the player was traded, I just picked the value from one team.

It's only 23, 24 if you have both Drew and Werth. I'm open to suggestions.

did he maybe inspire a certain Johnny Depp movie?

  43. Andy Says:

Speaking of Derek Lowe, he just got traded to the Indians.

  44. bluejaysstatsgeek Says:

    @40, add

Brian Roberts (66) could help round out the roster.

  45. Richard Chester Says:

    Andy:

Did Mel Brooks collect royalties whenever that Reds outfield started?

  46. Baron Says:

And with the Young, Frank and Stynes outfield, the Reds also featured Danny Graves on the mound.

  47. Kahuna Tuna Says:

Bones Ely. Luis Aparició's last name means "ghost" (apparition).

    Larry and Ben Sheets?

  48. John Autin Says:

    Don Mueller (Mandrake The Magician)

  61. Dark Says:

Al Dark (Blackie or the Swamp Fox)

    http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/d/darkal01.shtml

A swamp fox doesn't sound like something you'd want to run into. Somehow he finished 3rd in MVP voting with 3.8 WAR and 3 homers. Still won the ROY.

  62. Mike L Says:

    Did anyone add Rip Collins?

  63. Don Says:

Tony Witchousky was not even corporeal:

    Height: 0' 0", Weight: 0 lb.

  64. Doug Says:

    Or Rip Sewell.

  65. TWE Says:

Unfortunately, I couldn't find a copy online, but I had a picture from the newspaper of Roger McDowell wearing a giant ogre halloween mask - I'm pretty sure it was during his Phillies years ('89 - '91). That year, I had him on my Strat-o-Matic team, and my "playing" photocopy of his S-o-M card had the 'R' of his first name accidentally cut off. So I taped the picture to the back of the card, and for the rest of the year, my long man in the bullpen was "Oger McDowell."

    I had a monster year...

  66. Cam Says:

    @#7,
    So was I

  67. Cam Says:

    Oh, and http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/graveda01.shtml

  68. DoubleDiamond Says:

I also noticed that Danny Graves pitched in that Young, Frank, and Stynes game, too. Batting leadoff for Cincinnati that day was Pokey Reese "s Pieces". Reggie "Bar" Sanders pinch hit for Graves late in that game.

The Astros players that day included Jeff Bagwell. Bringing home trick or treat candy in a bag, well, that's how it's done. Unless you use an old pillow case. Also Dave "I want a" Clark "Bar". (My usual Chris Berman name for him is Dave Clark "Thirty-Five", a reference to the number he wore for at least part of his career as well as to the 1960s British group the Dave Clark Five.)

  69. Don Says:

2 treats for you -- chocolate and beer!

    Tim Teufel (German for “devil”)
Phil Todt (German for “dead man”)
    Jeff Dedmon
Chih Fang Pan (outfielder in the A’s system)
    J.P. Howell
    Mysterious Walker
    Andy Tomberlin

    Reggie Jackson (Mr. October)
    Ozzie Smith (The Wizard)
