The Devil wears green

Posted by Andy on September 21, 2011

Courtesy of Night Owl cards, I forgot that the Rays (then called the Devil Rays) once wore uniforms that were mostly green.

Periodically there's a movement to introduce more of a variety of color into major league uniforms. Expansion teams often jump on this. But for whatever reason, teams end up gravitating to either red or blue.

There was a sporcle quiz on this recently:

Only a handful of teams don't have red or blue on their uniforms and most of the rest prominently feature black.

In a card-related note, I am not a fan displaying the text (player name, team name, etc. in the silver or gold foil. Not easy to read and I don't think the foil "classes it up" as much as the companies do.

Remember that atrocious teal trend back in the 90's? It even got so bad that SI for Kids, that bastion of brilliance, did a spoof in which the "Teal Monster", "Teal Jacket", and "Putting Teal" all replaced the previously green versions. I don't know if it was because of that or not, but I had to utter the phrase, "I have a visceral hatred of the color teal" when my fiance and I were choosing wedding colors. It is rare that a man has a visceral reaction to any color, but teal.... ugh.

I do wish there could be more variety in team colors. I was disheartened when the D-Backs changed to generic red a few years ago, because I'm in the minority that liked the purplish/greenish colors they had. Red and blue get to be boring. I like it when teams have a specific color associated with them consistently that differentiates them from other teams, like the A's with green and gold. I actually liked those old Astros multicolored uniforms. Having a distinct look makes teams more distinct.

They never had a winning season with the devil, and haven't had a losing season without the devil.

for someone who throws as hard as he does, jackson is not very good. what gives?

Agreed. Love the Astros and Dbacks old colors. You INSTANTLY recognize them, and that's part of what I love. When the Dbacks first switched to red, on Sportscenter highlights, I often wouldn't know if they were the Nats or the Dbacks until after a few seconds.

The worst uniforms ever were the old Padres and Astros uniforms... honorable mention goes to the late 60's Kansas City A's...
I like some color but do not make it look like softball uniforms....
Worst uniform idea... shorts for the mid 70s White Sox....

Those 1979, we are family, Pirates uniforms were horrible.

Especially the caps. To this day the image of a submarining, Kent
Tekulve, closing the WS against the Birds isn't complete without
    that dopey hat on top.

As for the Padres, we can choke those up to Ray Kroc. Trying to make
his team look like a hamburger with mustard.

And finally, yes those White Sox uniforms were the worst. When you think
of it, what was the worse idea, those uniforms, or disco demolition night?

Can we throw in the 80s White Sox uniform with the player's number on the front of the pantleg in that mix?

i liked the 90's Padres uniforms. their current ones are pretty bad, especially the camo ones.

@1 which makes the A's the only team without blue, red, or black

The mid-70s had to be the peak of the colorful unis- the Indians had all-red, the Orioles all-orange, the A's all-green, the Padres all-yellow, the White Sox' sailor-boy unis- I actually liked them all... especially the Pirates' garish mix-and-match sets...

  14. John Says:

I dig the green, and particularly that Devil Ray uniform. It's... idaknow... classy, I guess. (Possibly also because my high school was green and white, and IIRC, the baseball unis were very similar.)

I like any and all variations in uniforms. The hideous Astro Day-Glo uniforms... the gold 70's Pirates uniforms.... hell, even that old Pirate cap. As someone else said, I like when you can instantly recognize the two teams in a highlight.

Of course, the move toward standard colors is probably marketing-driven: I'm sure that the popular colors sell more game jerseys. What a shame.

  15. Kahuna Tuna Says:

I like the D-Rays' old green uniforms. Green is my favorite color anyway, and to my mind the good color combined with the clean lines made for a very appealing look. No denying the lack of team success in those unis, though.

The worst uniforms ever were the old Padres and Astros uniforms

Yes and no, IMO. I feel faintly nostalgic for those "earth bands" Astros uniforms. However, the 1978-84 Padres uniforms were simply awful, especially the rounded-off, all-lower-case letters. I live in San Diego now and am a Padres fan, but if they were still wearing those uniforms I'd look around for another team.
