It's fun to see some of these guys who got off to hot starts in the HR department...and then didn't get close to 50 HR on the season.
July 5th, 2011 at 3:03 pm
I think you could use a touch of formatting on this.
July 5th, 2011 at 3:10 pm
Fixed. 🙂
July 5th, 2011 at 3:23 pm
190 times in 43 seasons, pretty common. Looks like the only seasons no one did it were '74, '84, '86, '91, '93 (surprise), and '10.
14 players had 30+ HR in the first 81 games, led by Bonds's 39 in '01. The only ones who did it outside the "steroid era" were Reggie, who famously had 34 in '69, and McGwire, with 30 in '87.
I was going to say how odd it is that none of these guys hit many doubles or triples, then I remembered that these stats are limited to the specific games in which they homered.
July 5th, 2011 at 3:27 pm
Can someone calculate how many homers each of these guys finished with? (Can you find that by searching off this saved report? Not sure....) That would be a nifty example of regression toward the mean.
July 5th, 2011 at 3:29 pm
How did you set the criteria to come up with these results? I tried something similar and apparently did it wrong.
July 5th, 2011 at 3:32 pm
This doesn't directly answer my #4, but I can say that for 1969-2010, there were 60 full seasons of 44+ HR, compared to the 186 half-seasons of 22+. Just goes to show what "on pace for" talk means, even this far into a season. Sure, sometimes players have reached new talent levels (Bautista, Granderson?), but your best bet is to assume the player will continue at his previously established performance level.
July 5th, 2011 at 3:38 pm
Axl, use the Batting Game Finder. Click "Find players with most matching games in a season." Set years 1969-2011. Under Additional Criteria, set HR >= 1. At the bottom right, choose "in team's first 81 games." That will give you a list of the most games in which the player homered. Then you resort the table for total number of HR.
July 5th, 2011 at 3:40 pm
Axl - it's tricky. At first, I wanted to do since 1919 - but that was too much to slice and dice the way I wanted it.
Here's what I did on this one. Since 1969, looked at all players with at least 1 HR in a game within his team's first 81 games of the season. Then, I sorted it by most HR - since a player could have hit more than one HR in a game that was pulled in the query. Then, I cut off anyone with less than 22 total HR. And, then, I sorted it by year.

Well I think that's pulling up seasons besides the one in your initial list, because it's searching their whole careers. Is it? It's hard to tell. But if I threw them both in Excel, I suppose I could delete lines and match them up by years. That might work. Will try it later, unless someone beats me to it.
July 5th, 2011 at 4:03 pm
"The only ones who did it outside the "steroid era" were Reggie, who famously had 34 in '69, and McGwire, with 30 in '87"
and of course, 1987 was the year of the juiced ball
July 5th, 2011 at 4:04 pm
Thanks Steve, I'll give it another shot.
July 5th, 2011 at 4:05 pm
Amazing that Bautista did not accomplish this last year. He had one helluva 2nd half in 2010.
July 5th, 2011 at 4:13 pm
In his last 68 games in 1999, McGwire hit 37 HRs (with a SLG of .810). He hit 30 in the first 70 games in 2000. So 67 HRs in 138 games.
How many players since 1969 have hit 22+ HRs in the team's last 81 games?
July 5th, 2011 at 4:32 pm
It happened 15 times in the 1980s. Fifteen times in the whole decade. Yet 24 different players accomplished it in 2000 alone. Insane.
July 5th, 2011 at 4:55 pm
@15 -
And a third of those in the 80s were from the "juiced ball" year of 1987. That it only happened ten times in the other nine years is truly unbelievable.
July 5th, 2011 at 5:01 pm
Jose Canseco, 1999. Huh?!?!? Does anyone else have NO recollection whatsoever of him having 30 HRs at the mid-point? Because I can't for the life of me remember that. Bizarre. I guess in the wake of 1998, it generated that little buzz. But still, it's a little disturbing to me that I don't remember that.
July 5th, 2011 at 5:04 pm
I do remember Canseco doing well in 1999
July 5th, 2011 at 5:11 pm
Canseco got hurt and missed most of July and the first half of August; he only hit 4 homers the rest of the season and finished with 34.
July 5th, 2011 at 6:03 pm
Is that the year he hurt his arm pitching?
July 5th, 2011 at 6:07 pm
I the year 2000 it got out of hand!! Guess pitchers had to fight fire with fire after that.

Belle's '98 season comes to mind.
Just looking at his #s after the AS break:
76 games: 31 HRs & 86 RBIs
.387 / .451 / .816
July 5th, 2011 at 7:37 pm
I remember that season. When the White Sox got Belle before the 1997 season, I was pretty excited. His first half in 1998 was good but not great. Then he finally started to hit the way Sox fans had hoped but by then the Sox were out of the race.
July 5th, 2011 at 7:45 pm
In 1996, Belle had a WAR of 4.9. It was 6.6 the year before. In 1997, his first year on the Sox, it was 0.9! They only finished 6 games out. Maybe if he had a WAR of 6.0 that year, they take the division. Maybe they win 1-2 more games against the Indians to get them ahead.
Then in 1998, when they have no chance, he has this great 2nd half and finishes with a WAR of 7.4. His OPS in the first half was .871 and in the the 2nd half it jumped to 1.267.
He sure picked a bad time to have in 1997 to have such a huge dip in performance.
July 5th, 2011 at 8:22 pm
Belle's '98 season comes to mind.
That reminds me of his '95: .322/.415/.787, 36 HR, 75 RBI, 69 R in 76 games.
That's why I was never gung ho about his MVP candidacy that season. Cleveland already had about a 30-game lead by the time he started going crazy. (But Mo Vaughan was a poor choice.)
July 5th, 2011 at 8:26 pm
This feat, was accomplished 63 times(a third of this list!!) between 1996-2000. During those five years, Minnesota had a total of zero players hit 22 home runs, in a complete season.
July 5th, 2011 at 8:30 pm
(not including Raphy's additions; that gives us 64 players, out of 201 overall.)

July 5th, 2011 at 9:00 pm
For those that actually were watching: What happened to Reggie in the 2nd half of the '69 season?
July 5th, 2011 at 9:13 pm
Speaking of Albert Belle ... and without addressing the question of value ... I wonder if his career might be viewed differently if he'd had four 50-HR seasons, instead of one.
-- In 1994, he was on a 52-HR pace when the season was halted.
-- In 1996, he had 44 at the end of August, with 27 games left on the schedule, but he finished 2 short.
-- In 1998, he had 45 HRs with 19 games left, but fell 1 short.
On second thought, it probably wouldn't have made any difference; although 50-HR seasons were still rare in 1996, any glow Belle might have gotten from racking up 4 of them would have been washed away in the deluge to come.
July 5th, 2011 at 9:16 pm
I took all the players (including Raphy's additions) and eliminated those from '81, '94, and '95. Their average for the first 81 games was 24.6 HR. Their complete season average was 42.6, so they hit 18.0 HR in the final 81 games, a 27% reduction.
The players who hit 30+ averaged 32.5 first half, 21.5 second half.
The players who hit 25-29 averaged 26.5 first half, 19.0 second half.
The players who hit 22-24 averaged 22.8 first half, 17.2 second half.
July 5th, 2011 at 9:23 pm
Lance Berkman did it 10 years ago and he's still lighting it up, got another one tonight and I think probably just missed this list by a few games.
July 5th, 2011 at 9:38 pm
From 8/1/95 to 7/28/96 (which I believe is 162 team games), Belle batted .326/.424/.736, 66 HR, 161 RBI, 146 R, 46 2B, 100 BB. And 10/11 SB.
July 5th, 2011 at 9:59 pm
Lot of steroid users on this list Twisto!
July 5th, 2011 at 10:17 pm
Adam Dunn has struck out 3 times tonight and left 5 men stranded. Ozzie has him hitting 3rd in front of Konerko and that's a disaster. I know Dunn normally walks a lot, but I don't think you can afford a stiff like Dunn striking out 108 times in 72 games hitting in the 3 hole. It's stupid! This last time Juan Pierre managed to draw a walk which is rare to say the least. Then Pierre steals second even though the Sox are down by 2 with 2 outs. It's special ed all the way for the Sox.
July 5th, 2011 at 10:37 pm
Good god, that would be 112 extra base hits for Belle, only topped by Ruth and Gehrig in their best individual seasons. Not to mention the 66 HR which would have set the record at that time.
***
You have to expect Dunn will come around, but I agree you can't keep hitting him 3rd right now. He's been awful.
July 5th, 2011 at 11:15 pm
This thread reminds me of how my favorite player broke my junior high school heart in 1973, by hitting about 19 HR's by about the All Star break, including a three HR game right before the break--and only 3 HR's the rest of the season after, even though he played another 70 games. Thanks for the memories (smile). That's got to be the craziest 2nd half power drop ever.
July 5th, 2011 at 11:52 pm
The only Yankees to make this list are Tino and Texeira. Hardly their best power hitters relative to the league.

"What happened to Reggie in '69?"
Nothing seems to stand out from the second half of that season. Other than the HR totals (and, consequently, his RBI, SLG and OPS), his first and second half numbers were remarkably similar.
Reggie did miss 9 straight games in mid-September. And, he played both ends of a double-header 18 times that year. Maybe he just wore down.
July 6th, 2011 at 1:13 am
More on Reggie's '69 season.
Since 1969, only 11 players have had more multi-HR games in a FULL season, than the 8 multi-HR games Jackson had in the first half of '69.
July 6th, 2011 at 1:36 am
@31 and 42, 43.
My dad has claimed to me on several occasions since my youth that Reggie was told by his coaches not to swing for the fences in the second half of that remarkable season.
I find this ascertation hard to believe on several levels. It's hard to believe that his coaches would say it, and even harder to believe that Reggie would have listened.
There is a time to dispute things with dad, and there are times to let it go. This is one of those instances. One the phone yesterday he stated that in a "clutch" situation he wants Jeter up at the plate. I was about to say, "It's fine to want that as long as you don't let the evidence get in the way." Then I thought about it, and figured, "Why say it?" Does it do any good to say that Jeter (right now) is probably the Yankees 7th or 8th best option at the plate in such a situation? (Unless we need a ground out to short)

In a biography of Reggie, it was stated that the pressure for the home run record combimed with his young age of 22 just got to him.
