Josh Beckett’s best start
Posted by Andy on June 16, 2011
Yesterday's start by Josh Beckett was the best of his career, at least going by Game Score:

He's also having his best season, although his BAbip is currently so low (.217) that he'll probably regress a bit as the year goes on.

His second '03 NLCS start was a 93.

Johnny Twisto was right. As a Cubs fan, I remember that game. He was unbelievable and unhittable. Although a 1-hit shutout is nothing to sneeze at either, I remember that playoff game. He pitched 2 days later in relief and the Cubs still couldn't do much with him.

I was actually thinking this would be a post as soon as a I saw his box score line!
When Beckett is on, he throws as well as anybody in baseball. He's continuing his tradition of being good in odd-numbered years and bad in even-numbered years, which I find endlessly entertaining (in odd-numbered years).

tough to believe game 6 of the 03 series was only an 84... felt a lot worse than that as a yankees fan...

During the game, I lamented to my family that poor Josh Beckett was pitching "the regular season game of his life", and nobody was watching. (Boston sports fans were otherwise occupied that evening, as our brethren at hockey-reference.com have already recorded.) I'd figured that, at some point, Beckett had been an even scarier monster in the postseason.
I hit the Josh Becket P-I tool Thursday morning to confirm. I love this site...

Yes, John you were right. Boston fans were otherwise ocuupied. As a Boston sports fan I was riveted to the Bruins/Canucks game 7. But, if you go back and look at the replay of Reid Brignac's hit off Beckett it almost looks like the pitch was in the dirt. Beckett was literally one pitch away from a perfecto.

When I saw the title of this post, I wondered whether you were talking about a particular game or the season as a whole. Which got me wondering as to how often a pitcher's best individual game (regular season, at least) comes during his best season. Obviously, there are a lot of ways to measure best games and best seasons, but it'd be interesting to look at guys who didn't follow accordingly, particularly those with their best efforts in their worst seasons.
