Bartolo Colon Throws Yankees’ 1st Shutout in 2+ Years
Posted by John Autin on May 30, 2011
Bartolo Colon tossed a 4-hit, no-walk shutout in Oakland Monday. It was the first individual shutout by a Yankees pitcher since CC Sabathia did it on 2009-05-08, over 2 years ago. Every other team had at least 1 CG shutout in that span.
Before CC, the last shutout by a Yankees pitcher was in 2006 by Chien-Ming Wang. Colon's last shutout was also in 2006. Since 2006, Bartolo Colon has as many shutouts in 55 starts as all other Yankees pitchers have in 854 starts.
Of course, the dearth of individual shutouts during the latest Yankee dynasty is not really a reflection on the starting pitchers. Rather, it shows that they usually have a strong bullpen, and they're always looking beyond today's game towards the postseason.
Incidentally, 2004 was the first full-schedule season in Yankees history that they did not have a CG shutout; they also did not have one in 1981 and 1994.
Here are the Yankees pitchers with the most shutouts since 1991. (Scott Sanderson?)

How about Cone's only Yankees shutout being his perfect game?

5 out of the 24 players wound being or were primarily career relievers.

JA, I thought I was in a time warp when you said Sunday in the thread. American long weekend or not today is Monday. 🙂
May 30th, 2011 at 10:48 pm
Great list, JA!
David Wells, the portly lefty, with 5 shut outs for the Yankees in1998 alone.
The Yankees 2011 starting pitching seems to be righting itself.

@ Scott Sanderson
John, I'm with you in forgetting that Sanderson had ever pitched for the Yankees.
Actually, it was with the Bombers in '91 (16-10, 3.81, 1.1 WHIP. 4.5 SO/BB) that he had his only All-Star appearance.
May 30th, 2011 at 11:00 pm
Sanderson also had as many shutouts in 2 seasons in New York as Pettitte had in 13 years. Tough to wrap your mind around that.
May 30th, 2011 at 11:12 pm
@5 @6
Doug, tough to see Jimmy Key and David Wells on any Yankees' list.
I guess all roads lead to where the money is.
But then, Carl Pavano's NY career shows the perils of an organization having too much money and no where to spend it.

#1 - And how about Jim Abbott's being a no-hitter, too!
May 30th, 2011 at 11:38 pm
Neil, thanks for the "update" -- I've corrected the day in the post.
May 30th, 2011 at 11:49 pm
@8, AlvaroEspinoza -- Funny, I was just thinking of "you" when I noticed Derek Jeter's .325 slugging average. Although you were known as a slap hitter, you still managed better than a .325 SLG in your 2 qualifying seasons as the Yankees' shortstop.
The last qualifying NYY SS to slug as low as .325 was your predecessor, Rafael Santana, in 1988.
Out of 26 qualifying shortstops this year, Jeter ranks:
-- 21st in slugging;
-- 20th in OPS+ (78); and
-- 24th in RBI (15).
It might be time to oil up your glove, Alvaro.

Neil L., shouldn't you be at the champagne celebration for Jo-Jo Reyes right now? 🙂
May 30th, 2011 at 11:58 pm
@7, Neil L. -- Not only Carl Pavano's career, but A.J. Burnett's, too.
A.J.'s combined stats with the Yankees to date:
28-27 record, 4.53 ERA, 97 ERA+, just under 6 IP per start, K/BB ratio below 2, $38.5 million in salary.
Would you say the Jays were lucky not to have re-signed him?

So, Bartolo Colon shut-out the A's?
OK, BR staff..time to man up...who picked the A's to win the West?
May 31st, 2011 at 1:01 am
@13, Chuck -- All I know is that we unanimously predicted that Seattle would be over .500 at this point.... 🙂
(I'm kidding, of course; I don't even qualify as "B-R staff.")

Scott Sanderson was by far the most reliable pitcher on those Yankee teams. And considering how bad they were at the time, "reliable" was all you could ask for.
May 31st, 2011 at 9:57 am
Yet, even with Colon's shutout, it isn't enough for B-R to recognize the Yanx as being in first place this morning, oven though they are .002 ahead of Boston.
May 31st, 2011 at 10:14 am
Wild... Cone's perfecto, Abbott's no-hitter... AND Doc Gooden's no-hitter.
The name that really throws me besides Sanderson is Ted Lilly. Hard to remember sometimes that he started as a Yankee.
May 31st, 2011 at 11:26 am
Any way to check how many 7-inning or 8-inning 0 run games there were?
Then comapre that to other teams? This year alone Sabathia and Colon have been pulled for no apparent eason other than Girardi's 'binder' callig for the "8th inning guy" or whatever.
The only reason Colon was in for the 9th yesterday was because it was not a ":save situation".
May 31st, 2011 at 12:41 pm
@19, Noodle --Why, of course the Play Index can answer that!
-- In 2010, the Yankees had 9 games in which the starter went at least 7 innings and allowed 0 runs. That ranked 21st in the majors; the median was 11.5, the max. was 21 (Phils), the min. was 4 (Nats, Royals, Cleveland).
-- Comparing them only to the AL in 2010, the Yankees ranked 9th out of 14; the median was 10.5, the max. was 19 (Twins), the min. was 4 (Royals, Indians).
