Who Paid For A-Rod’s PED Usage?

Posted by Steve Lombardi on February 10, 2009

Thanks to Baseball-Reference.com's Batter vs. Pitcher feature, we can look at which opposing pitchers were undressed by Alex Rodriguez while he was playing for the Texas Rangers.  Here's the hurlers that A-Rod feasted on each season from 2001 through 2003:

2001
2002
2003

You'll see Ramon Ortiz and Freddy Garcia come up a few times on those lists. I wonder what they were thinking when A-Rod confessed, yesterday, to using PEDs from 2001 through 2003?

"I wonder when my name will get released."

  2. Raphy Says:

According to JC Bradbury, it is possible that no one paid for A-rod's steroid use.

Maybe Ortiz, Garcia and the rest of them should have made better pitches? Rodriguez still had to hit the ball. Lots of lousy players uesed drugs too. Whom did they feast off of?

    hi guys

Wonder if you can help. The Red Sox blog is debating whether JD Drew is worth the money...and they point out that JD Drew has been an on base machine over his career. He has a .392 career on base percentage, And he also hits for power== a career .502 slugging percentage .

Who else active, or retired, fits these criteria? How many right fielders?

    Hope you can help

Here is the search as you literally asked for it.

By definition, Drew will be the worst player on the list, so it doesn't tell you much.

I loosened your criteria, so that you could have a better feel for his place.

There is an era adjustment issue here.
Here is one more list of RF with a similar OPS+.

This includes a lot of players who have already had the lean end of their careers.
Here is the comparable OPS+ list through age 32:

The Magglio Ordonez comparison intrigues me.

    I hope this helps.

If Drew plays a full season, he's probably worth the money. He usually doesn't, so he probably won't be.

For whatever reason, a lot of the guys on Raphy's first list seem to be more athletic/better defenders than Drew, which impacts their value and probably their projected aging. I tried running a couple different searches and Tim Salmon came up on one. He seems like a fair comp.

    first...thanks so much

    fascinating

Now I see Ross Youngs Hall of Famer who died young as a comparable, and Selkirk, Justice and Salmon. No one really gets on base like Drew and slugs 500.

He's like a Gwynn with power.
