Sometimes it's just nice to play with Baseball-Reference.com's Play Index and see where it takes you. For example, let us look at which team, since 1954, had at least one triple in a game the most games in a row. Thanks to PI's Team Batting Streak Finder here's that answer:

Ah, so, the 1979 Phillies are the leaders here. Let's look at their Team Batting Page at B-R.com and see who had more than one triple for them that season:

Bowa and McBride leading the pack here, huh? Yeah, I can just see those two slashing balls into the gap on the turf at the old Vet; and, then, taking off, scooting around the bases. Seeing this, I next wondered how many teams in the "D.H. Era," had at least two players on their team with 10+ triples in a season. Thanks to PI's Batting Season Finder, here's that answer:
No shockers here - alotta fast guys playing on turf teams, for the most part. Seeing how triples are no longer hit with the frequency that came in baseball prior to the 1930's, and the fact that more teams play on natural grass (as it should be!) these days. I doubt that we'll see a team with 4+ players with 10+ triples in a season again...
But, it was still fun to use Play Index to travel down this road and check this all out.

Ryan Howard's streak of consecutive post-season games with an RBI ended last night despite the Phillies' big win. Tonight, A-rod has a chance to move into sole possession of first place for this record. In my opinion, this is a pretty big deal, particularly since most of his RBI so far have been very meaningful in terms of game situations.
Incidentally, the record for consecutive regular-season games with an RBI is pretty far out of reach:

Rodriguez is reminding me more and more of Barry Bonds, who was another guy who failed a lot in the post-season before having a breakout playoff output late in his career. Now Bonds' earlier failures are rarely remembered--I wonder how A-rod's reputation will change after this season? If he can drive in a few more runs and the Yankees win the World Series, my guess is most fans will forget his earlier poor performances.

Tonight's mlb Game Notes mentions that Scott Kazmir has not won in his last 5 post-season starts. UPDATE: Make that 6. (Teammate John Lackey snapped a six game streak at the start off this year's playoffs.) This made me wonder who had the longest win-less postseason streak. Here are the results from the PI streak finder.

Clearly to own such a streak, your team has to be winning and to keep pitching you have to be doing pretty well also. However, a combination of inconsistency and bad luck left these players on this undistinguished list. As a group, during these games they made 45 starts and went 0-18 with 27 no decisions. They averaged 5.96 innings per start and had an ERA of 4.26 and a WHIP of 1.31. Yet their teams won a lot of pennants and championships during these streaks. (I'm not putting a number on it because there are too many variables to know what to count). A few more interesting fact come to light when you take a closer look.:
- Al Leiter recorded more postseason wins as a reliever for the Blue Jays and Yankees (1 each) than he did as a starter for the Mets and Marlins (0).
- Doc Gooden never won a postseason game. In the '86 playoffs he went 0-3 with a no decision.
- Gary Nolan won his first postseason game and his last (the '76 clincher), but none in between.
- From when he broke the Yankees hearts in '95 until the LCS before he dominated the Yankees in 2001, Randy Johnson went 0-7 with 1 no decision. The 7 losses were in consecutive starts.
- Charles Nagy pitched in 5 postseasons. In each one he earned a decision in the first game he started. He only earned 1 more decision in any of the other nine postseason game that he started.

With Ryan Howard's outstanding performance so far this post-season, you've probably already heard that he just tied Lou Gehrig for most consecutive playoff games with an RBI:

Howard's not the only player with an RBI in every game during these playoffs. A-rod has done the same, and he has a streak of 7 going back to the Yankees' last playoff game in 2007.
Notice that the Iron Horse's numbers were incredible in those 8 games--an OPS of 2.006 and 17 RBI. On this list, only Bernie Williams has numbers comparable to Gehrig's.
Incidentally, by limiting the streak to just League Championship Series games, one guy stands out above all others:

Streaks like these are quite impressive. Remember that when playing in the post-season, batters are usually facing quite good pitchers. Driving in runs in 10 straight games is amazing.

Gehrig's streak shows up again, since all his post-season games were World Series games. He's joined by REG-GIE REG-GIE from 1977-1978.

With an RBI in each of his first 6 postseason games this season, Ryan Howard has tied a 24 year old record held by Carlton Fisk. Like Howard, Fisk also started off the 1975 postseason with 6 consecutive games with at least 1 RBI, but amazingly enough Fisk only accumulated 6 RBI in those games.Keeping in mind that not every postseason even had 6 games, here are the all time leaders in consecutive games with an RBI to start a postseason:

Cliff Lee has a game score over 60 in his first two career post-season starts. Here are the only guys to do that in the last 20 post-seasons:
Games Link to Individual Games
+-----------------+-----+-------------------------+
Pete Schourek 2 Ind. Games
Curt Schilling 2 Ind. Games
Charles Nagy 2 Ind. Games
Cliff Lee 2 Ind. Games
Darryl Kile 2 Ind. Games
Orlando Hernandez 2 Ind. Games
Doug Drabek 2 Ind. Games
Chris Carpenter 2 Ind. Games
Steve Avery 2 Ind. Games
Ok, wait, that's not quite right. This is a Pitching Game Finder search, limited to post-season and a player's first two games, and those with game scores over 60 in both. It doesn't consider any players who might have had relief appearances. In other words, a relief appearance doesn't receive a game score and so if any players had a relief appearance in their first two post-season games, they automatically cannot make this list.
A more complete list can be found here, using a streak finder. It adds in Jon Lester, Miguel Batista, and a few others who belong in the club, but also adds some guys who do not belong. In this case, a guy like Jose Contreras doesn't belong. He makes the list because he did it in his first 2 games with the White Sox. The Streak Finder considers streaks at the start of a player's career or tenure with a new team.
Dave Stewart, who also shows up on that streak list, also doesn't count since 1990 wasn't the beginning of his post-season career. The streak finder, since I limited it to 1990-present, ignores anything that happened before 1990. Mind you, Steward DID get a game score above 60 in his first 3 post-season starts--they just came in 1988. (He managed a score above 60 in 8 out of his first 9 career post-season starts...wow!)

How many players, since 1954, have hit a triple in 4 consecutive games (or more)? Thanks to Baseball-Reference.com's Play Index Streak Finder, we can look for things like this...let's do it in slices...first, 1954 through 1979:
StreakStart Streak End Games AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI SO BB SB CS BA OBP SLG OPS Teams
+-----------------+-----------+-----------+-----+------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------+
Billy Williams 1963-05-08 1963-05-11 4 13 2 6 0 4 0 5 3 3 1 0 .462 .563 1.077 1.640 CHC
Next, how about 1980 through 2005:
StreakStart Streak End Games AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI SO BB SB CS BA OBP SLG OPS Teams
+-----------------+-----------+-----------+-----+------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------+
Nomar Garciaparra 2003-05-31 2003-06-04 4 19 7 8 1 4 0 1 0 0 0 0 .421 .421 .895 1.316 BOS
Sammy Sosa 1994-05-14 1994-05-17 4 14 3 8 0 4 1 4 1 1 1 2 .571 .600 1.357 1.957 CHC

Lastly, no one has done this, meaning hit a triple in four straight games, to date, since 2003.
Will we ever see someone hit a triple in 5 straight games? Well, we haven't seen it happen since 1954. So, while anything is possible, I don't like the odds of this happening - any time soon.
It's interesting that, for the four times, since 1954, that a player has hit a triple in 4 consecutive games, that it's never happened after June 4th in a baseball season. I guess no one wants to run that much once it starts getting hot outside. 😉

Longest Streak to start career with multi-hit games - Baseball-Reference PI
Ian Desmond has gotten off to a fine start for his career with three multi-hit games, but he'll need to be better to be the best of recent memory.
To generate this list I used the batting streak finder. I made the decision to only consider games with 2 or more AB's. This causes us to include Oliva's streak. In 1962 and 1963 he pinch hit a bunch of games, but actually had only one multi-AB game in that stretch. He then started 1964 with five multi-hit games. Salazar pinch ran in his debut and then rattled off his streak. The caveat that this is only for the retrosheet-era 1954 on applies. If you want to push the retrosheet era back earlier, volunteer here.
