What Sabathia & Pettitte Mean To Recent Yankees Octobers
Posted by Steve Lombardi on October 21, 2010
To date, over the last two post-seasons, the Yankees have won 16 games. And, 12 of those 16 games were started by CC Sabathia and Andy Pettitte.
Yankees post-season wins, 2009 to date, by those who started the game:
Rk | Player | #Matching | W | L | W-L% | ERA | GS | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | CC Sabathia | 7 | Ind. Games | 5 | 0 | 1.000 | 3.18 | 7 |
2 | Andy Pettitte | 5 | Ind. Games | 5 | 0 | 1.000 | 3.16 | 5 |
3 | A.J. Burnett | 3 | Ind. Games | 1 | 0 | 1.000 | 1.86 | 3 |
4 | Phil Hughes | 1 | Ind. Games | 1 | 0 | 1.000 | 0.00 | 1 |
.
Note: In 10 of those 12 wins, either Sabathia or Pettitte earned the "W."

How many losses did they take? Or losses did they start, I should say? It is a little hard to put these numbers into context without seeing the whole set of games.

Off the top of my head, I think the Yankees lost 3 games started by the duo.
Game 3 of '09 ALCS (Pettitte)
Game 1 of '09 WS (CC)
Game 3 of '10 ALCS (Pettitte)

James-
Is that the combined line for the three loses by Sabathia/Pettite? That's pretty impressive. It would make their ERA in losses right around 3, even lower than in their wins. Interesting stuff. Thanks for the info. It's clear that, at least over the last two years, Sabathia and Pettite have been pretty essential to the Yankees success. Sabathia avoided taking a loss in Game 1 of this ALCS, but then had that crappy start factor into his "Wins" numbers. On the flip side, Pettite took a pretty hard luck loss in Game 2. Looking at the numbers here and going off my memory, it'd seem like the Yankees success is more a product of Pettite/Sabathia than Pettite/Sabathia are a product of Yankee success.

Remember the old Sox slogan? Hurst and Clemens and the rest are lemons. How about Sabathia and Pettite, the rest forget it.

Reminds me of another gem, from a few years before:
"Spahn and Sain, then pray for rain."

Frank,
I've heard that one. Good for you for recalling it.

Did anyone following the 1914 Braves re-do that old political slogan with "James, Rudolph and Tyler, too"?
