If anything, this list shows us that Jose Bautista's season this year is pretty unique - in terms of his age and homerun production. And, until now, I never realized how much it looks like what Carlos Pena did back in 2007:

  1. Kahuna Tuna Says:

    Henry Aaron, 1971: 31 HR in 62 games started in Atlanta. Amazing.

  2. BSK Says:

    Thome's current season just misses... 7.46%. He might still get there. Assuming 20 more PA, just 2 HRs would do it. 11 or fewer more PAs and he just needs 1.

  3. John Autin Says:

    @2
    BSK -- But Thome won't qualify for the batting title, which was a requirement for the list. (Not to take anything away from his fine season.)

  4. John Autin Says:

    On a tangent ... Jason Heyward's .400 OBP at age 20 has been widely reported as most unusual, but I haven't heard much about Mike Stanton's power feats at age 20.

    Age 20 or under, highest isolated power (min. 300 PA):
    1) Mel Ott, .306.
    2) through 5) Ted Williams, Alex Rodriguez, Bob Horner, Frank Robinson.
    6) Mike Stanton, .260.
    7) through 10) Tony Conigliaro (twice), Jimmie Foxx, Mickey Mantle.

    Age 20 or under, most HRs:
    1) Mel Ott, 42.
    ...
    13) Mike Stanton, 21.

    Age 20 or under, 15+ HRs and HRs >= 5% of PA:
    Mel Ott, Frank Robinson, A-Rod, Tony C. (twice), Bob Horner, Mike Stanton.

    P.S. to Steve -- Is there a tutorial on how to directly post the results of P-I searches, as you and others do?

  5. Frank Clingenpeel Says:

    I have to admit that Aaaro really surprised me with his post-age-35 output. In fact, I never figured he'd last long enough to break Ruth's record until he had passed Mays on the all-time list by twenty or so.

    But then, I was also the one who said that 29-year-old rookie that was the Giants' main reliever was just a flash in the pan, too. No way he'd last more than a couple of years, so it was a good thing they had Marv Grissom to rely on. And I was right -- Hoyt Wilhelm lasted "only" a couple of decades after that.

  6. Johnny Twisto Says:

    He was no Joe Black, eh Frank?

  7. Tmckelv Says:

    @5,

    Speaking of not-so-great predictions, in 1980, my brother and I predicted that fellow Brave Bob Horner would become the all-time HR leader some day.

    but as I see the lists in #4 above, maybe the guess wasn't so bad considering the other names on the lists.

  8. Steve Lombardi Says:

    ~~Is there a tutorial on how to directly post the results of P-I searches, as you and others do?~~

    Do you mean in a comment/reply to a post?

  9. John Says:

    Speaking of Carlos Pena:

    Pena has the chance this season to become the first-ever full-time player with an average below the Mendoza Line and an above-average OPS+. As of right now, he's at .198 and 103, respectively.

    Only five previous players have done that with at least 100 at-bats:

  10. John Autin Says:

    @9
    John -- Technically, Billy Ashley does not belong in that table, since he hit .200 even -- you said "below the Mendoza Line."

  11. John Autin Says:

    @8
    Steve -- Yes, I meant, how can I post P-I search results right here in a blog reply?
    But perhaps I've figured it out -- let's see if I can post a corrected list of players with BA 100:

    OK, I give up. Anyone?

  14. Steve Lombardi Says:

    John - give up on what?

  15. Steve Lombardi Says:

    John Autin, ah, now I see, your comments were held in moderation because of the html code in them. It's something that WP does. Have you tried using the pre-formatted [pre] type tables? Those may post better in comments sections.

  16. John Says:

    Yeah, John, I noticed that after I posted it. Mostly, I was just having fun with my first shared P-I report. 😛

    Anyways, the point stands: Pena's season (still) a rarity.
