Two Wax Jobs In One Season

Posted by Steve Lombardi on August 18, 2008

Brian Bannister got waxed by the Yankees yesterday.  He started the game for the Royals - and allowed 10 runs before the Yankees were charged with their fourth out of the game.  This made me wonder how many times this has happened, since 1956.  Here's the list:

Wow.  Just seven times since 1956.  And, this season was the first time since 1956 that it's happened twice in a season.  And, three out of seven times it was a Royals pitcher that got beat up here.  Ouch.

You've left out cases where a pitcher allowed 10 runs in the 1st inning, but was left in to pitch some more. It happened to Scott Feldman just a week ago. http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/BOS/BOS200808120.shtml

    Interesting point.
I was looking for guys who allowed 10, didn't retire 4, and then were lifted.
But, I see your point on these other guys as well.

Interestingly, for 106 years straight years (1900-2005), no pitcher allowed 10+ runs in the first inning of a game. But, since 2006, it's been done 4 times (Scott Feldman, Mark Redman, Jason Jennings, and Luke Hudson).
