300/350/400 Games @ 2B, SS & 3B

Posted by Steve Lombardi on July 15, 2010

Using Play Index, I decided to look at how many players have appeared in 300, 350, and 400 games at 2B, SS and 3B in their careers. By this, I mean, how many players have played at least 300 games at every infield position sans 1B and C during their career.

Here are those lists...

First, the 300+ group:

Rk Player G From To Age PA AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB IBB SO HBP SH SF GDP SB CS BA OBP SLG OPS Pos Tm
1 Buck Herzog 1493 1908 1920 22-34 6047 5284 705 1370 191 75 20 445 427 0 307 120 216 0 0 320 68 .259 .329 .335 .664 456/739 NYG-BSN-TOT-CIN-CHC

Next, the 350+ group:

And, finally, the 400+ group:

No one is in the "500+" club here.

It's an amazingly small group, the 300+ group.  And, of course, Buck Herzog stands alone in the "400+ Club."   There's a trivia question for you...

  1. John Q Says:

A really underrated player was Gil Mcdougald, who came really close to accomplishing this.

    Mcdougald had:

    599-2b
    508-3b
    284-SS

  2. capnjiffy Says:

Craig Counsell should bring back his goofy batting stance in recognition of this accomplishment.

  3. JDV Says:

    Tony Phillips came even closer.

  4. John Autin Says:

JDV -- Thanks for mentioning Tony Phillips, the only modern player with at least 200 games at SS, 2B, 3B and OF. Phillips also has the distinction of spending at least 1 season as a regular at each of those positions.

  5. John Q Says:

Yeah, Tony Phillips is another incredibly underrated player.

  6. tmckelv Says:

For some reason, when I saw "Buck Herzog", my mind wen to "Buck Weaver", especially when I saw Herzog's last season was 1920 and I knew Weaver spent significant time at different positions in the infield.

I was going to make a comment as to how there could have been a 450+ or 500+ guy had Buck not been kicked out of baseball. But alas, it was not the right "Buck". Weaver did have 400+ games at SS and 3B...but only 1 game at 2B.

John Cusack would have been thrilled.

  7. dukeofflatbush Says:

Mark Loretta is the only player to have at least 200 Gs at 1b, 2b, 3b & SS.
    He also pitched 2 games.
    I still think Biggio's trifecta of 1900 G at 2nd, 400 at C & 350 in OF is the most impressive.
Robin Yount is the only player 1000 games apiece at Center and Short, the two most difficult positions in front of the plate.
A-Rod is the only player to have 900 games at SS and 3b, soon to be the only with 1000, and two seasons away from 1200 apiece.
Pete Rose is the only player with more than 300 games at 1b, 2b, 3b & OF, in fact he has at least 600 at each.

  8. Hartvig Says:

My first thought when I saw the title was "I bet Tony Phillips is one of them". I thought maybe Dick McAuliffe might make the cut too but he only played about a seasons worth of games at 3rd. Gil McDougald was another great possibility as well. All 3 are seriously underrated players.

  9. Johnny Twisto Says:

Wow, WAR loves Gil McDougald. 40.0 WAR in a 10-season career in which he only topped 600 PA four times (and not because of injuries (I'm pretty sure)) and played in a park which killed right-handed power. It's not hard to imagine an alternate reality in which McDougald amasses something looking like a HOF career. It might have been Bill James who conjectured that McDougald could have hit 30+ HR in 1961 -- he had been taken by the Angels in the expansion draft, and would have played in a better park for righty power in a season with a lot of big fluke years. Instead he chose to just retire. (If he could have made $10M that year would he have retired? Flashing back to the Steinbrenner thread, more $ improves the quality of play.)

  10. Harry Grandview Says:

Rod Carew played over 1100 games each at both 1B and 2B.

  11. Johnny Says:

Why did Counsell stop that old batting stance?

It must be rare for a player to change his batting routine at age 38-39.
