How Do I … With PI? (part II)

Posted by Raphy on July 6, 2010

The last couple of days have brought a number of new PI questions. To make things easier, here is the second installment of How Do I ... With PI?  For an explanation or to read old questions, please see the original post.

  1. Ben Says:

Something quick and simple to start off - is there sortable stat leader boards for a given season? Can I find the top 10 catchers in the NL in OPS?

  2. Logan Says:

Is there any way to determine how many times David Ortiz has scored from first base?

  3. Ben Says:

Are there any plans to merge years in "event finder"? Example: I'd love to find all grand slams for all years, not just one at a time. (Though I can understand how complicated and painstaking it would be to find, say, every single since 1952.

  4. Raphy Says:

@1 Ben - You can do that wit PI (The stats will be season totals, not just while playing that position.)

In the PI Season Finder- Player Batting:
Set years from 2010 to 2010.
Under defensive position select catcher and make sure that any marked position is checked.
    Sort by OPS
(select qualified for batting title under minimum playing time.)

  5. Raphy Says:

@2 -I'm not sure what you're looking for, but the base-running table has how often Ortiz was on first when a double was hit and how often he scored. http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/o/ortizda01-bat.shtml#batting_baserunning

If you're looking for a more general question: If Ortiz reaches first, what is the likelihood of him scoring? That I can't tell you.

  6. Raphy Says:

@3 I would love that, but I don't know what Sean has planned. (If any body wants to donate a truckload of money to provide Sean with the processing power for those type of searches, I'm sure he'd be happy to oblige.)

  7. Dave Says:

I would like the chance to have (on the season finders) a way to look for stats in the first X amount of years with a team instead of only from the start of a career (What's the most homers by a player in his first year with the Pirates even if he was traded to the team during the career...)

Adam Laroche had 21 HR with the Pirates in his first year with the team. He should be 3rd on the list but the lists are set that way.

  8. Ben Says:

    Thanks for the answers, Raphy.

Any way to do a "stretch/span" finder? Meaning, how can I find the most HR's in a 50-at bat stretch or Manny Ramirez's best batting average in a 50-game span?

  9. David M. Says:

This may be easy, but is there a way to search for partial season stats? Like, if I wanted to find out who had the most home runs over their team's first 50 games in any given year? Thanks.

  10. MSTI Says:

Can I find team runs per game while a certain player is starting? For example, I'd like to compare the Dodgers runs per game when Rafael Furcal is starting at SS as opposed to Jamey Carroll this year. I know how to find each of their own stats while being the starting SS, but I can't find a good way to find team runs per game in those games.

  11. Thomas Says:

I just posted this in the most recent blog post (about Santana's home run hitting), and I'm posting it here just in case anyone else is interested and doesn't happen to read that post and all it's messages:

How would I look up pitchers batting stats from games. ie. pitching a shutout AND homering in the game?

  12. Johnny Twisto Says:

David M., I think you can search, using the Batting Game Finder, for most games in the team's first 50 games in which a batter hit a HR, and then you could sort to see who actually had the most HR. I don't think you can search for any random 50 games. In this century: In '01 Bonds had 26 HR; in '06 Pujols had 24; a few guys tied with 20.

  13. David M. Says:

Hmmm, ok, that helps a bit, but what if I want to know, say, who has reached base the most times through 100 games? Or who has the most strikeouts through 100 games? Is there an easy way to do this?
