Somewhat adding on to Raphy's post on Ubaldo Jimenez, via Baseball-Reference.com's Play Index Pitching Game Finder - starting pitchers, since 1969, to win 9+ times within a team's first 50 games of a season. There's more here than you would think:

Andy Hawkins? Really? I guess so....

FWIW, yes, I know that Ubaldo Jimenez is now 10-1. But, win #10 came in his team's 51st game. And, this cut was in he first 50 games.

Wilbur Wood actually had 14 Wins in the White Sox first 50 games of 1973. He also had five losses, though, as he started a ridiculous 19 of his team's first 49 games. Two-and-a-half man rotation?
June 1st, 2010 at 12:52 pm
I think the discrepancy is because one of Wood's 14 wins was in relief (the last 5 innings of a 21-inning suspended game).
How times change. In that game the teams used a total of eight pitchers -- no utility infielders trying out their stuff on the mound back then. Both starters (Gaylord Perry and Stan Bahnsen) went 13.

I forgot to mention that after pitching the last 5 innings of the suspended game Wood then threw a shutout in the regularly scheduled contest. I loved Wilbur when I was growing up.

Would it be possible to include which team these pitchers were playing for at the time? Some are easy to identify (Morris with the '84 Tigers, for example) but I confess I don't recall, off the top of my head, for whom Bill Singer pitched in '73...
(Ask not for whom the pitcher hurls... he hurls for thee?)

Interesting how on the list of players to win the 9+ games in their teams first fifty before 27 had only two players on there twice - Clemens and Frank Tanana. I think people forget how truly dominant Tanana was before he got hurt and had to reinvent himself.

28 May 1971, Vida Blue brings his 10-1 record to Fenway Park to go up against Sonny Siebert, 8-0. Ahead 4-2 in the 9th, Siebert gives up a home run to Sal Bando but, with a little help from the bullpen, gets out of the inning with the win, thus ensuring that, 39 years later, he will join Blue in a table at bbref blog. And I was there (for the game, that is). http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/BOS/BOS197105280.shtml

I feel the need to mention that "Jumping Jimenez" is a really bad title. Either you need to pronounce "Jimenez" with a hard J like an ugly American or pronounce "Jumping" as "Humping".
