According to the Gamelogs, the Red Sox regular season and Mirabelli's career both ended with Joe Nathan striking him out on three pitches with the bases loaded, 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th and the Twinkies leading 3-2.

Unfortunatly for history, there is no record of what Matt LeCroy did with the historic baseball.

Mirabelli joins such notables as Al Kaline, Edgar Martinez and Dave Winfield who finished thir careers as a DH.

How can you be sure Mirabelli's career is over?

  3. Tom Clancy Says:

We can't be sure, we can only hope. Victim recovery.

  4. spartanbill Says:

He is 37 years old, and coming off three seasons with OPS averages of 87, 51 and 63.

Short of Tim Wakefiled becoming the first player/GM in recent history, I can not see a scenario where one of the other 29 teams will pick him up.

  5. BunnyWrangler Says:

How many pitcher-catcher combinations like Wakefield-Mirabelli have there been? The Red Sox felt that only Mirabelli could catch Wakefield, so, after they traded him away, they had to trade for him.

The only famous one of which I can think is Carlton-McCarver; I don't know if McCarver bounced around with Carlton, but I know that he once said that the two of them would be buried 60 feet, 6 inches apart.

Reference this article for a list of all catchers since 1960 who started no more than 50 games in a season, with at least 20 of them being with one starting pitcher:
