Never Scored Ten

Posted by Raphy on June 1, 2010

When the Indians exploded for 13  runs against the Yankees this past Saturday, it was the first time this season that the team racked up a double digit run total. Cleveland thus avoided joining a short list of  7 teams since 1901 that went an entire season without scoring 10 runs in a game.

Unbelievable that the 1988 Padres did that, AND had a winning record!

Andy, I know... wild. But they look like the best of the offenses on this list... 6-0 @ 8 runs and 6-0 @ 9 runs... they just never happened to push that last one across. They were also shut out the fewest times among these teams. For 1988, the Padres' 11 SO against put them just into the upper half of baseball: tied with Oakland for 11th out of 26. (The Mets and Yankees tied that year with the fewest, shut out only six times each.)

I was looking at some team pages after this post and noticed something interesting. Specifically, I was looking at Atlanta's team page and noticed that they haven't lost a game this year in which they scored >=5 runs:

Who had the lowest number of losses when scoring >=5 in the past 30 years (non-strike year)? That would be the 1990 Reds with 3 (they were 64-3 in those games).

[...] every team in baseball has now scored 10 runs at least once, there are still 2 teams that have not yet allowed 10 runs to score in a game. [...]

  6. Djibouti Says:

Until the other night they hadn't scored 10 in a game, yet they had scored 8 in the 9th inning of a game (http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/BAL/BAL201005150.shtml). Unfortunately they hadn't scored in their previous 16 innings leading up to that.

  7. Djibouti Says:

Other note: that game against the Yankees was also the third time that the Indians had given up double digit runs this year. In the two previous occasions, they scored 0 total runs losing 10-0 and 11-0 to OAK in a horrendous three game set back in April (go figure, they won the middle game 6-1).

[...] Never Scored Ten (Baseball-Reference). I’m a little surprised to see the ‘88 Padres on this list. They were actually good, although Tony Gwynn had a down season (for him) and only one player on that team had an OPS higher than 800: Left-hander Dave Leiper went 1-for-2, for a cool 1000. Okay, so maybe I shouldn’t be surprised to see them on this list. [...]
