Bloops: Satchel Paige Song

Posted by Neil Paine on May 10, 2010

Reader Howard Pearlman wrote in this weekend and told us that he sings a song about the great Satchel Paige called "Never Look Back", so I thought I'd give him a link today. Because anytime someone pays tribute to Satchel, I think it brings joy to true baseball fans everywhere.

Any discussion about Satchel Paige songs begins and ends with "Satchel Paige Said" by The Baseball Project. You have to enjoy any album that pays tribute to Jackie Robinson, Big Ed Delahanty, Fernando Valenzuela and Black Jack McDowell to name a few.

What?!...no "Van Lingle Mungo" song tribute?

When Ernie Harwell died, I was reminded that the first time I heard of him (well, maybe the first time I heard of him) was in 1973, when Hank Aaron was chasing Babe Ruth's career home run record. I saw a feature on NBC's Game of the Week (announced by Curt Gowdy and Tony Kubek) about how this Harwell guy and a Tigers relief pitcher had written a song called, "Move Over Babe, Here Comes Henry". I had forgotten who the pitcher was, but I just looked at the 1973 Tigers page here to refresh my memory, and I believe it may have been Bill Slayback. (There was another pitcher that year with a similar name, Chuck Seelbach, but I think it was Slayback.)

Came on here just to recommend that album, Brian. I especially love the Harvey Haddix song -- which needs a new verse after July 23 and Monday!
