Last night, Andre Ethier became the first player in the majors to hit a walk-off grand slam this year. The guy is blowing people away so far, tied for the league lead in homers and total bases and leading in RBI, SLG, and OPS+.
When kids fantasize about baseball in their backyards, most of them think about hitting a walk-off grand slam with his team down by 3 runs. In Ethier's case the game was tied, but check out all the walk-off grand slams in recent history:

Wow, it's been a while since we've had one of those perfect backyard moments. Not since Adam Dunn in 2006 has a guy hit a walk-off granny while his team was down by 3 runs.

Impressive that A-Rod has 3. More impressive that David Eckstein has 2.
May 7th, 2010 at 10:13 am
It would be fun to see a full 'down-by-three' list. Dunn, Giambi, and Giles here, and I'll bet this is quite rare through the years.
May 7th, 2010 at 10:20 am
That list is easy to compile--I just need some time to do it. Can't get to it today. Trying to finish up at work before I head to Fenway for tonight's Sox/Yanks game.
May 7th, 2010 at 11:14 am
A "Ultimate" grandslam in the bottom of the ninth, down by 3 runs and 2 outs is a play worth 90%! wWPA. Check it on the boxes for both Dunn in 2006 and Giles in 2001. Its really fun to see the wpa chart go shooting down so suddenly at the end.
May 7th, 2010 at 11:55 am
Holy cats. Lefty hitter Giles' 2001 walk-off slam off lefty pitcher Wagner capped a seven-run ninth in which the Pirates' first two hitters made outs.
Who among us wouldn't have been heading for the exits when the home team had two outs and no one on, trailing by six runs in the bottom of the ninth?
May 7th, 2010 at 12:05 pm
Me for one Kahuna.
I make it appoint to advise everyone in my party before I make plans that leaving early is not an option.
I am willing to be the designated driver, and if there is an issue they can go in their own vehicles.
I should mention, that I live in Los Angeles, a city where people will leave the 100-meter dash after 75 meters to beat the traffic. I am taking my niece to her first Angels game in June, and have already given her Mom (not a fan) an article about the Pawtucket/Rochester game in 1981. Given the state of the Angels bullpen, I doubt the game will go long, but just the same i am not leaving early.
if you see me getting up in the later innings, it is to move down to a vacant field box.
