May 6th – Open Thread

Posted by Raphy on May 6, 2010

I thought that it might be interesting to have a place for people to post their thoughts, observations, and questions during tonight's games. So if you see or hear a stat worth mentioning or if a question comes to mind, post it in the comments here we'll discuss it. I'll update this post with any comments that catch my fancy, hopefully with some additional commentary. I hope to post some ideas in the comments, as well.

The Phillies have already beaten the Cardinals, but there are still 10 games on tap. I'd love to hear what you have to say.

  1. Devon & His 1982 Topps blog Says:

    I have 2 thoughts & 1 question.

Blues Jays @ White Sox... totally White Sox for this one I think. Not only has Danks been dominant (and he's the probably for Chicago), the Jays can't beat lefties this year yet, being only 1-5 when facing them.

The Giants have yet to score a run in any 1st inning of a road game this year.

How good are the Rays this year???

  2. Michael Says:

Zito, Lincecum, and Cain and 2 days of rain!

  3. Charles DeLano Says:

Like Spahn, Sain and pray for rain. (a 1948 Boston Braves proverb).

  4. Charles DeLano Says:

And in response to the Rays, their Team ERA is tops in the AL, and they're 20-7, one game in front of the potent Yanks in the AL East.

  5. Dave Says:

Pirates have scored at least a run in the 1st inning 7 of the last 8 games

  6. Dave Says:

Lastings Milledge is the only "regular player" without a homer for the Pirates.

  7. Andy Says:

I have been listening to the Cubs radio telecast of the Cubs-Pirates game and I am astounded how bad of an announcer Ron Santo is. Pat Hughes is fine, but Santo was already talking about fishing and other stuff in Oregon in the top of the first inning. The Cubs and Pirates are irrelevant to most baseball fans, but come on guy--don't make it so obvious. He's also way too much of a homer.

  8. Dave Says:

Pirates score 5 in the first inning for the 1st time since September 2008

  9. Dave Says:

The Cubs actually have the best winning % in all of baseball since 2008 when allowing 7 or more runs on the road!

  10. Seth Says:

Twins have scored at least 2 runs in the first inning of their last 6 games. 7 is the major league record.

  11. DoubleDiamond Says:

I remember the team then called the California Angels in the 1970s having the slogan, "Wright and Ryan and two days of cryin'." That's Clyde and Nolan, of course.

  12. Andy Says:

And the Phillies circa 1997-1999: "Schilling or a killing"

  13. Seth Says:

And that Twins streak just ended.

  14. Dave Says:

    Pirates leading 11-0
Is it possible for a team to lose 20-0 and win 20-0 in the same season?

  15. Raphy Says:

Scott Olsen is working on a no-hitter. You can check out the best starts of his career here.

  16. Raphy Says:

Matt Cain just gave up a hit. However, the 2 no hitters that were going on at the same time reminded me of June 29th 1990 when Fernando Valenzuela and Dave Stewart both threw no-hitters.

  17. Mike Says:

Olsen blew the No-Hitter and now he's on the hook for the loss. Any idea where you could find how many pitchers have taken a no-hitter, perfect game or shut-out into the 8th and then ended up losing the game?

  18. Raphy Says:

Olsen can't lose. The inning ended tied.

  19. Mike Says:

You're right Raphy. The way Clippard was pitching I thought one more run was going to score.

  20. Seth Says:

2 consecutive games for Carl Pavano going 8 innings and getting no run support, losing 3-0 last week, 2-0 tonight.

  21. Dave Says:

The Pirates won tonight by the score of 11-1
It marked the 119th straight game won by the Pirates when scoring 11+ runs at home.
Their last loss when scoring 11+ at home was on May 30, 1970 (a 13-11 loss vs the Giants).

The 119 game winning streak is the longest current streak in baseball and the 2nd longest since 1952...behind only the Cardinals (non active) streak of 167 games

  22. Johnny Twisto Says:

It's just hard to understand why they've struggled so much when they know they just need to score 11 at home to win.

  23. Raphy Says:

Its only been 84 games, but the Mets have never lost at home when scoring 11 runs.

  24. DoubleDiamond Says:

I know that the Pirates have lost at least one road game in which they scored 11 runs in this time period. That was this game:

    http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/PHI/PHI198906080.shtml

After they scored 10 in the top of the first, announcer Jim Rooker said that he'd walk back to Pittsburgh if the Pirates lost that game. He didn't walk home then, but he did a charity fundraising walk across the state after the season ended. Steve Jeltz hit only 5 home runs in his career, but 2 came in this game - one from each side of the plate. I think the only other Phillie switch hitter who has done this was another reserve middle infielder, Tomas Perez in 2001.
