Last night the Padres pitched their 5th shutout of the season, leading MLB so far in 2010:

Interesting that despite having 5 shutouts, they have no complete games yet (shutouts or otherwise.)
As far as shutout totals go, the Padres are off to a pretty good start in this area, but check out their team shutout totals over the 10 previous seasons:

Wow, I had forgotten that they had 20 shutouts a few years ago. That team finished 89-74, meaning that other than those 20 shutouts, they went 69-74. It's amazing to me that the pitching staff was capable of throwing 20 shutouts but that in the other 142 games the team wasn't even .500.
The last teams to tie or surpass the Padres' 2007 total were:
Rk | Tm | Year | #Matching | W | L | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | ATL | 1992 | 24 | 24 | 0 | Ind. Games |
2 | ATL | 1998 | 23 | 23 | 0 | Ind. Games |
3 | SDP | 2007 | 20 | 20 | 0 | Ind. Games |
4 | PIT | 1992 | 20 | 20 | 0 | Ind. Games |
The Braves and Pirates both had at least 20 shutouts in 1992, which goes a long way to explaining why they met in the NLCS that year.
Anyway, it will be interesting to see what happens to the 2010 Padres. Coolstandings.com's simulations gave them an 8.6% chance of making the playoffs at the beginning of the season but as of today they are up to 37.6%.

Man, in 2007 Greg Maddux was the only pitcher for the Padres to get a complete game, and that wasn't even a shutout!

OK, which of you had the Nats as first team to 10 saves?
