Jeff Hamilton

Posted by Andy on January 26, 2008

Here's a frivolous weekend post for you. Remember this crazy game? Third-baseman Jeff Hamilton played 20 innings at 3rd base, then retired the side as pitcher in the 21st, then took the loss in the 22nd? And he pitched only after Orel Hershiser pitched 7 innings in relief!

Crazy.

I remember going to an Angels-Royals game that night, dealing with a dead battery in the parking lot after the game; and getting home in time to watch the last 6 or 7 innings on TV. The cameras kept showing Fernando Valenzuela in the dugout pleading with Lasorda to be given the ball in spite of the fact he had thrown 7 busy innings the night before. I remember Vin Scully speculating that Chris Gwynn would be the default pitcher, and Valenzuela would be in LF. Scully also speculated whether Tim Belcher, (the scheduled Sunday starter,) would return from the team hotel and relieve Hamilton.

Hamilton actually looked like a pitcher (as opposed to a thrower) and even though the PBP shows both Astros hits in the 22nd as Line Drives, I don't remember them being hit expecially hard.

I'm surprised he didn't let Fernando pitch in the game, actually.

Both Gerald Young & John Shelby went hitless in 10 plate appearances, the last time this has been done.
