Missing the cycle by a single
Posted by Andy on April 21, 2010
Earlier this season, the Rockies' Ian Stewart had his second career game where he missed the cycle by a single. This is the rarest way of missing the cycle by one type of hit.
Within the years covered by the Game Finder, here are the players with the most career "cycle-misses-by-a-single":

Incidentally, if the search is limited to just the first 300 games of a player's career, only 3 of the guys above stay on the list: Gregg Jefferies with 3 and Stewart and Joe DiMaggio with 2 apiece.

That top grouping has some very odd bedfellows.

Two of Jeffries's three times came within a 10-game period (August 29 and September 9, 1988)!

Manny Trillo?

Trillo was not a terrible hitter (.263 Career Avg) but he only Slugged .345!!! That means a huge % of his hits were singles - so to accomplish this 3 times is ridiculous. I love baseball stats.

Surprised to see Sheff with the highest OPS in this group.

Perhaps what's most impressive about Stewart's making this list is the fact that, as of today, he has only six career triples. What are the odds that he'd hit two of those triples in games where he also had a double and a homer but no single?

Maybe Bonds would have gotten that single had it not been for that IBB in one of the games. Nah, he would have probably hit another home run.

Kind of a rally-killer that way, Bonds was.
