1,000 hits with one team

Posted by Andy on April 10, 2010

In today's NYY-TAM game airing nationally on Fox, Alex Rodriguez got his 1,000th career hit with the Yankees. That made me wonder if that was the second team he got 1,000 hits for (the other being, perhaps, the Mariners.) Here are all active players with 1,000 hits with one team. This list was generated with the season finder by selecting the options for teams with players matching the criterion over their careers.

Rk Tm Lg #Matching
1 Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 3 Garret Anderson / Chone Figgins / Vladimir Guerrero
2 Cleveland Indians 3 Manny Ramirez / Jim Thome / Omar Vizquel
3 Philadelphia Phillies 3 Bobby Abreu / Pat Burrell / Jimmy Rollins
4 Atlanta Braves 2 Andruw Jones / Chipper Jones
5 Baltimore Orioles 2 Melvin Mora / Brian Roberts
6 Boston Red Sox 2 David Ortiz / Manny Ramirez
7 Chicago White Sox 2 Paul Konerko / Magglio Ordonez

So A-rod doesn't show up here at all, not with the Mariners and not with the Yankees. He just got his 1000th hit with the Yankees a few minutes ago, and it turns out from looking at the Mariners franchise encyclopedia page that A-rod got 966 hits with them.

Guys appearing multiple times above:

  • Manny Ramirez with the Indians and the Red Sox
  • Vladamir Guerrero with the Nationals (he got them all while they were still called the Expos) and the Angels.

Teams with no active players who got 1,000 hits from them (note: even if the player is still not currently with that team): D-backs, Cubs, Reds, Tigers, Astros, Dodgers, Brewers, Mets, Padres, Giants.

the tigers are at zero, but they do have a few guys with a chance to get there this season.
    brandon inge - 906
    magglio ordonez - 816
    carlos guillen - 806

that would also put ordonez on two teams' active lists.

  2. dukeofflatbush Says:

Last season, the Yankees had 5 players with 850 hits for them. Jeter, Posada, Rodriguez, Matsui and Cano. With the exception of A-Rod, the other four had all of their career hits with the Yankees.

  3. Justin Says:

Jason Varitek is not listed but has 1232 career hits, all with the Sox.

  4. Chris Says:

Astros have Lance Berkman but he is on the DL so he doesn't show up as "active", I guess.

  5. Zach Says:

As a Nats fan, I don't think Vlad should be listed under "Nationals." Why completely throw out the Expos? Washington will have one soon in Ryan Zimmerman.

  6. Zachary Says:

That's just a result of the search parameters. They're the same franchise, so there's no way to distinguish them. It's like how LA Dodgers stats include Brooklyn totals.

  7. Andy Says:

No the 'active' option just means not officially retired. Being on the DL still counts as active. I don't know why Berkman doesn't come up.

  8. DavidRF Says:

The Yankees are really good at promoting these franchise-specific mini-milestones. I'm waiting for The Onion to have an article honoring A-Rod for having fewer Yankee hits than Horace Clark. 🙂 The Yankees have more history than any other franchise so it seems odd when they reach deep to manufacture more. (Nothing against the blogpost, Andy, you spun it into something interesting).

  9. Jay Says:

Varitek was in the Seattle system and was traded to Boston with Derek Lowe for Heathcliff Slocumb... Not his original team

  10. Zachary Says:

Since neither Varitek nor Berkman are listed, I suspect that active is linked to whether they've played a game this season or not. Let's try searching it tomorrow when Varitek's Saturday game will give him an appearance this year.

  11. Andy Says:

Zachary, it looks like you are correct as Varitek shows up this morning. That's not the way things should work and I'll mentioned it to Sean. Good catch.

I redid the search from 1989 to 2010 and left off any choice of whether the players are active or not. It means that maybe we should add Darin Erstad, who I don't think is officially retired. Same for Ray Durham. Rich Aurilia, though, I think has officially retired. Carlos Delgado should be on there but also hasn't played this year.

Jay: This search doesn't care about how many teams a guy has played for--in only counts if he got 1,000 hits for any one team. Hence guys like Manny showing up twice on the list.

  12. Chase Says:

A-Rod has 500 hits with three different teams; how noteworthy is that? Can you look using the play finder?

  13. Kahuna Tuna Says:

Rusty Staub had 500 hits with four different teams.
