Pitching in every game
Posted by Andy on April 8, 2010
Three games into the 2010 season, two pitchers have appeared in each of their team's games:
Rk | Player | G | Year | Age | Tm | Lg | GF | W | L | SV | IP | H | R | ER | BB | SO | BF | AB | Pit | Str | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Brad Ziegler | 3 | 2010 | 30 | OAK | AL | 0 | 0 | 1 | 0 | 2.1 | 0 | 2 | 0 | 3 | 1 | 0.00 | 10 | 7 | 28 | 13 |
2 | Daniel Bard | 3 | 2010 | 25 | BOS | AL | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 3.1 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 2 | 2 | 0.00 | 13 | 11 | 48 | 28 |
Ziegler has made only 28 pitches to record 7 outs (faced 10 batters) and the lone runner he inherited was stranded. Bard has thrown 48 pitches to record 10 outs (faced 13 batters) and has allowed his lone inherited runner to score.
Last year, there were also 2 pitchers to appear in each of his team's first 3 games. Nobody appeared in his team's first 4 games.

1 | Arthur Rhodes | 2009 | 3 | Ind. Games | 0 | 0 | 0.00 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 3.0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 3 | 0.00 | |
2 | Brandon Medders | 2009 | 3 | Ind. Games | 0 | 0 | 0.00 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 2.1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 2 | 0.00 |
Rhodes has had very good seasons in 2008 and 2009 and he's still going strong at age 40.
Here are the most games from the start of the season in which a pitcher has appeared in every game:
2008: 4 (Dan Wheeler, J.C. Romero, Will Ohman)
2007: 4 (Roberto Hernandez, LaTroy Hawkins, Jason Frasor, Rafael "Nuno" Betancourt)
2006: 4 (Derrick Turnbow, Felix Rodriguez)
2005: 4 (Brian Fuentes, Alan Embree, Scott Dohmann)
2004: 4 (Eddie Oropesa)
2003: 4 (Gabe White)
2002: 4 (Scott Sauerbeck, Ugeth Urbina)
2001: 4 (Jeff Fassero)
2000: 3 (Ricaro Rincon, Sean Lowe)
So, four straight games has been the magic number for all of these years except 2009 and 2000. We'll see about 2010 if Ziegler or Bard makes an appearance.
A couple other notes:
- In 2006, Turnbow recorded saves in each of those first 4 games. I wrote about this almost exactly a year ago.
- For the years in which box scores are available in the PI, the record for most consecutive games at the start of a season with a pitching appearance is 6, done by Rod Scurry in 1982. Amazingly, Scurry did not allow a single earned run over those 6 games and yet still recorded two blown saves (by allowing inherited runners to score.) Runners up behind Scurry with 5 straight games are Pedro Borbon in 1973 and Clay Carroll in 1971.

I forgot that many teams have played only 2 games so far..we'll revisit this one in a few days.

Your note on Scurry is further evidence that a relief pitcher's ERA does not tell as much of a story as a starting pitcher's ERA.

Ziegler did not pitch in Thursday's (4/8) game. So his streak is over

Daniel Bard did it too with another ineffective appearance last night.
