Notes

Here are a few notes on upcoming content as well as a couple of silly stats:
- We posted about Frank Thomas' retirement but so far have been silent on Tom Glavine. That will all change this Saturday, when my Card of the Week post will feature the newly-retired 300-game winner.
- Don't know what Card of the Week is? It's a new weekly feature that happens each Saturday when I post a baseball card and some stats about the player(s) on the card. So far there have been two installments: 1968 Topps White Sox Rookie Stars and 1981 Fleer Lonnie Smith.
- Another blogging programming note: on Saturday March 6th I will be live-blogging the Cardinals-Marlins spring training game in Jupiter FL. I'll be at the game and posting regular updates and photos to a blog post right here on Baseball-Reference.com. You are encouraged to check in real-time with your thoughts, questions, and comments. In my experience, few things in life top sitting in the warm sun during a spring training game, and I'm excited to share this experience with all of you.
Now for some silly stats.

That's a weird 1968 season for Brock. He led the league in doubles, triples, and stolen bases but had one of his worst career OBP marks at just .328. Still his OPS+ was 124 which is obviously damn good for a leadoff hitter.
And here are players with at least 10 triples in a season and the same number of strikeouts:

Mattingly fell just short of making this list too, with both 38 doubles and walks in 1987.

Don't pooh-pooh the four homers of the guys on the first list — Turner's put him on the 1905 AL leaderboard (tied for ninth).
How about ROE = HR? I'd be curious whether the downhill trend met the uphill trend during a certain period, like maybe the '20s.
February 18th, 2010 at 11:45 am
I don't think ROE is an "official" stat, so it doesn't exist for years we don't have the play-by-play accounts yet.

A couple of cards you should use for "Card of the Week"
1976 Topps Traded Oscar Gamble-Love that afro
1984 Fleer Glen Hubbard-The snake photo
1988 Tim Flannery- Posing with his surf board
1976 Kurt Bevacqua- Gum Bubble blowing champion

Brock's 1968 stats aren't so odd when you consider that was the Year of the Pitcher. Yaz won the AL batting title that year hitting a robust .301! An OBP of .328 in '68 is nothing to be ashamed of.
February 20th, 2010 at 12:26 am
that 1968 season will always be a great stat buster.
February 20th, 2010 at 7:28 am
Just like 1987 for homers at least.
