Who Am I? #7
Posted by Raphy on January 7, 2010
Although I was primarily known as a ferocious #3 hitter, my game was at its best from the 2 hole. In fact, over a 3 year period I batted second 105 times and put up these gaudy numbers:
Games | PA | AB | R | H | 2B | 3B | HR | RBI | BB | SO | BA | OBP | SLG | OPS ▾ | SH | SF | IBB | HBP | GDP | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
105 | 491 | 442 | 97 | 162 | 35 | 1 | 33 | 90 | 42 | 26 | .367 | .419 | .674 | 1.093 | 2 | 4 | 14 | 1 | 12 |
Translated into 162 games those numbers would look like this:
Games | PA | AB | R | H | 2B | 3B | HR | RBI | BB | SO | BA | OBP | SLG | OPS ▾ | SH | SF | IBB | HBP | GDP | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
162 | 758 | 682 | 150 | 250 | 54 | 2 | 51 | 139 | 65 | 40 | .367 | .419 | .674 | 1.093 | 3 | 6 | 22 | 2 | 19 |
Who am I?

I got it on my second guess, but I won't spoil the fun by posting the answer. If you want a hint, notice that one of the statistical categories above is fairly unusual and a hallmark of the player in question.

without looking it up, is it Barry Bonds?

Nope

I'm totally guessing....David Ortiz? Manny Ramirez? (can't remember which hit #3 typically) ...I'm thinking maybe 1 of them hit #2 a lot early on..

Neither.
"I" played at a time when 51 home runs was still considered a really big number.

MM.
This guy wears #7.
Bonds never wore that number.

My first guess proved right ... Don Mattingly!

Is it Tony Gwynn?
January 7th, 2010 at 5:54 pm
another guess, Frank Robby?

Mattingly was my guess.

I am neither.
Might I suggest considering all of my statistics. There are some combinations in my numbers that are rather unique.

I am Don Mattingly!
Sorry TheGoofyOne. I overlooked your post for a minute.
The numbers are from 1985-1987, Mattingly's biggest seasons.

dermitage - The #7 refers to the Guess Who am I post number (there had been 6 previous ones), not the player's uniform number.

Best part of that is that Bonds did wear #7 as a rookie: http://www.cardsone.com/store/images/87%20topps%20bonds.jpg
My first thought was Mattingly. Cool.

I never thought of Mattingly as "ferocious"...and I watched him day in day out. He was too cool & slick to be ferocious.

I thought Mattingly was ferocious for a while. But our view of "ferocious" was a bit different in that era, when it could mean .300, 35 HR and 35 2B, not 40 HR and 150 Ks.

Anybody have a theory of why Mattingly had so few strike outs, a very solid OPS+, high batting average, but also so few walks? He was always one of my favorites, but never did understand why he had such low BB. Thoughts?
