20 Wins and Under 200 Innings

Posted by Chris J. on September 22, 2007

Josh Beckett just became the first pitcher in MLB to win 20 in 2007.  He also has 194.7 IP on the year.  How many pitchers have ended the year with at least 20 wins but under 200 IP?  Well  . . .

He might end up being the third.  Of course he's still got a start left.  All he needs is to get shelled or pull an elbow ligament.  C'mon, Josh!  Do it for history!  Wrench that shoulder!

I wouldn't be surprised, especially if the playoff matchups are already set, if he only goes 3 or 4 innings as a tuneup for the playoffs...so he might stay under 200 IP even without an injury.

Beckett's one complete game will tie him with 10 other pitchers for second place on the list of fewest complete games by a 20 game winner. In 2000 Roger Clemens managed to do it without throwing any.

Wins aside, do you feel that you're less impressed with some of Pedro's untouchable ERA+'s in the late 90's/early 00's because he went so many less innings than guys like, say, Steve Carlton or Sandy Koufax or Bob Gibson? Or does the sheer quality of his performance outweigh all that?

Ok guys - what is Bob Grim's place in baseball lore?

Also - I will repost this here since it has gotten swallowed up - when we were talking bout Deron Johnson's 19-75 thing the other week. Even though it's not quite the same - Ike Delock for the 1960 Red Sox had a winning %age of .474 and an an ERA of 4.74. Anybody else know of an occurence like this? And all zeroes don't count!

Note post five was exact. Post 6 allowed for a slight variance. With the same variance post 5 would be longer.

    Thanks Oscar -

I thought I would have gotten a reply on Bob Grim's place 'in the world' 1st! Anybody?

  9. OscarAzocar Says:

All zeros is not as easy as it sounds because you have to lose without giving up an earned run.
    Its happened 11 times since 1901. http://www.baseball-reference.com/pi/shareit/wYeP
6 players did it for a career. http://www.baseball-reference.com/pi/shareit/YeWh

  10. Johnny Twisto Says:

I noted a while ago that there is a IP/10 limit for starting pitchers. For any number of IP, only 1 or 2 pitchers have managed to win 1/10 that many games. That is, only 1 or 2 pitchers won 25 games while pitching less than 250 IP. It's true for 150 IP, 210 IP, 350 IP, whatever.

Thanks for the additional info Oscar Did you happen to notice the fact that Santorini's OWN error allowed his 4 runs to be UNER! He seemed to be a good hitting pitcher. The next year he hits a HR in an EXPANSION BOWL game on the same day his former teammates get no-hit by the CUBBIES!

Still waiting on the 1st contestant to tell me bout Grim - c'mon folks!
