Reggie Jackson in Baltimore. It is something I carry with my as a story of inspiration. He was traded there ONE WEEK BEFORE THE SEASON BEGAN. 29 years old. 254 HRs, 2 HR titles, 1 MVP, part of 3 WS championships (although couldn't play in the '72 series). Coming to a great team (Bobby Grich, Ken Singleton, Lee May, Mark Belanger, Paul Blair, Jim Palmer) that had been to the playoffs five times over the past seven years under Earl Weaver, going to the World Series three times, and winning it all in 1970.
Because of an injury, Jackson missed all of April, and then got off to a terrible start. by july 1st, after playing 51 games, he was hitting .220. and the Orioles were in 2nd to last place. The Orioles had never had a losing record under Weaver, yet here they were 4 games under .500. Local and national press pointed the finger at Jackson. They reported the he was not easy to get along with, and that he wasn't receptive to Weaver or his style. It seems like such a low point. But you've got to say to yourself: The .220 hitter isn't me! The World Series MVP is me. Hitting the transformer in Tiger Stadium, that's me! Succeeding after injuries and slumps, that's me! How do you set your mind to it? It's that mindset that carries you through. You know who you are. Things aren't working right. Critics abound. But you're going to rise again. And he did, becoming AL player of the month that July, looking like this (

So he *then* gets his contract with the Yankees...and by the following October (with some hiccups along the way) he's hitting three dingers in a game to clinch the World Series with all the baseball world watching. What a turnabout! And what accolades he received! It really is inspirational to me, and I've thought about deeply from time to time when I've been in seemingly insurmountable ruts.

It just came to my attention recently that Jackson never hit 30 HR in consecutive seasons. Surprising. He had seven 30+ HR seasons in his career,
