Adam Wainwright

Posted by Andy on September 11, 2009

Check out all pitchers since 1901 to record at least 18 wins and an ERA+ of 160 or better in their age 27 season. (Wainwright is now 28, having had his birthday a couple of weeks ago.)

Of course, Wainwright's ERA could rise before the end of the season and push him off this list, although his recent performance suggests otherwise.

This is one hell of a list to find yourself on. With the exceptions of Lundgren, Ford, and Bearden, these guys all had long and very productive careers. Some of the very best pitchers of all time appear as well.

I was reading about Russ Ford in some Yankee encyclopedia a few months ago. I think there was an interesting reason he got such a late start and/or faded away so quickly, but I can't seem to lock any of that information in my head these days. He still holds some Yankee pitching records.

Russ Ford was the first master (some say inventor) of the scuffball. He came up with the scuffball in the minors, was purchased by the Yankees, and had an incredible rookie season. His major-league career didn't last long, though, based as it was on a gimmick pitch.
