Full lists of career leaders by team
Posted by Andy on August 26, 2007
Chris' recent post about various teams with guys having at least 50 career homers gave me an idea about how to use the PI, and it worked.
It turns out that you can generate lists of the total number of players for each team to meet a certain criteria over their career simply by doing the following: Batting Season Finder, check the bubble at the top for "Find totals for matching seasons or careers", then in the bottom right set your criterion (such as HR >= 50), and then in the top right pick to sort by teams w/players in years. Because you've already chosen to also sum by career, it gives you a result like this:
This is a team-by-team list of all players with at least 50 career homers, 1901 to 1979 (following Chris' search):

That's pretty cool, isn't it? As with Chris' findings, this is limited to homers while playing for a given team. In other words, a player who hit 25 homers for one team and 25 homers for another team wouldn't show up on either team's list since he didn't hit 50 for one team. That applies to all of the following searches as well.
How about the list of players by team with 1000 RBI for that team:
Franchise Number Players Matching +---------------------------------+------+-----------------------------------------+ Detroit Tigers 10 Norm Cash / Ty Cobb / Sam Crawford / Charlie Gehringer / Hank Greenberg / Harry Heilmann / Al Kaline / Alan Trammell / Bobby Veach / Lou Whitaker New York Yankees 10 Yogi Berra / Bill Dickey / Joe DiMaggio / Lou Gehrig / Tony Lazzeri / Mickey Mantle / Don Mattingly / Bob Meusel / Babe Ruth / Bernie Williams Chicago Cubs 7 Ernie Banks / Mark Grace / Gabby Hartnett / Ryne Sandberg / Ron Santo / Sammy Sosa / Billy Williams Minnesota Twins 6 Kent Hrbek / Joe Judge / Harmon Killebrew / Kirby Puckett / Sam Rice / Mickey Vernon Atlanta Braves 5 Hank Aaron / Andruw Jones / Chipper Jones / Eddie Mathews / Dale Murphy Boston Red Sox 5 Bobby Doerr / Dwight Evans / Jim Rice / Ted Williams / Carl Yastrzemski San Francisco Giants 5 Barry Bonds / Willie Mays / Willie McCovey / Mel Ott / Bill Terry St. Louis Cardinals 5 Jim Bottomley / Ken Boyer / Rogers Hornsby / Stan Musial / Enos Slaughter Baltimore Orioles 4 Eddie Murray / Boog Powell / Cal Ripken / Brooks Robinson Cincinnati Reds 4 Johnny Bench / Tony Perez / Frank Robinson / Pete Rose Los Angeles Dodgers 4 Carl Furillo / Gil Hodges / Duke Snider / Zack Wheat Pittsburgh Pirates 4 Roberto Clemente / Willie Stargell / Pie Traynor / Paul Waner Oakland Athletics 3 Jimmie Foxx / Bob Johnson / Al Simmons Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 2 Garret Anderson / Tim Salmon Chicago White Sox 2 Luke Appling / Frank Thomas Houston Astros 2 Jeff Bagwell / Craig Biggio Kansas City Royals 2 George Brett / Hal McRae Philadelphia Phillies 2 Del Ennis / Mike Schmidt Seattle Mariners 2 Ken Griffey / Edgar Martinez Texas Rangers 2 Juan Gonzalez / Rafael Palmeiro Cleveland Indians 1 Earl Averill Colorado Rockies 1 Todd Helton Milwaukee Brewers 1 Robin Yount San Diego Padres 1 Tony Gwynn Toronto Blue Jays 1 Carlos Delgado
I find it surprising to see the Cleveland Indians with just one player in that category. Although among their career RBI leaders are Jim Thome with 927, Nap Lajoie with 919, and Hal Trosky with 911.
Let's generate a few more of these lists for fun:
Most players by team with at least 200 career stolen bases:
Franchise Number Players Matching +---------------------------------+------+-----------------------------------------+ San Francisco Giants 10 Barry Bonds / Bobby Bonds / George Burns / Art Devlin / Larry Doyle / Frankie Frisch / Willie Mays / Fred Merkle / Red Murray / Fred Snodgrass Los Angeles Dodgers 7 Willie Davis / Jim Gilliam / Davey Lopes / Pee Wee Reese / Steve Sax / Zack Wheat / Maury Wills Chicago White Sox 6 Luis Aparicio / Eddie Collins / Ray Durham / Frank Isbell / Lance Johnson / Fielder Jones Cincinnati Reds 6 Bob Bescher / Dave Concepcion / Eric Davis / Barry Larkin / Joe Morgan / Vada Pinson Cleveland Indians 6 Ray Chapman / Elmer Flick / Nap Lajoie / Kenny Lofton / Terry Turner / Omar Vizquel Houston Astros 6 Jeff Bagwell / Craig Biggio / Cesar Cedeno / Jose Cruz / Joe Morgan / Terry Puhl Minnesota Twins 6 Rod Carew / George Case / Joe Judge / Chuck Knoblauch / Clyde Milan / Sam Rice Philadelphia Phillies 6 Bobby Abreu / Larry Bowa / Von Hayes / Sherry Magee / Jimmy Rollins / Juan Samuel St. Louis Cardinals 6 Lou Brock / Vince Coleman / Ray Lankford / Willie McGee / Jack Smith / Ozzie Smith Detroit Tigers 5 Donie Bush / Ty Cobb / Sam Crawford / Ron LeFlore / Alan Trammell New York Yankees 5 Hal Chase / Rickey Henderson / Derek Jeter / Willie Randolph / Roy White Oakland Athletics 5 Bert Campaneris / Eddie Collins / Harry Davis / Rickey Henderson / Billy North Baltimore Orioles 4 Brady Anderson / Al Bumbry / Burt Shotton / George Sisler Chicago Cubs 4 Johnny Evers / Ryne Sandberg / Frank Schulte / Joe Tinker Kansas City Royals 4 George Brett / Amos Otis / Freddie Patek / Willie Wilson Pittsburgh Pirates 4 Barry Bonds / Max Carey / Omar Moreno / Frank Taveras New York Mets 3 Howard Johnson / Jose Reyes / Mookie Wilson Seattle Mariners 3 Julio Cruz / Harold Reynolds / Ichiro Suzuki Washington Nationals 3 Andre Dawson / Marquis Grissom / Tim Raines Boston Red Sox 2 Harry Hooper / Tris Speaker Milwaukee Brewers 2 Paul Molitor / Robin Yount San Diego Padres 2 Tony Gwynn / Gene Richards Toronto Blue Jays 2 Roberto Alomar / Lloyd Moseby Atlanta Braves 1 Hank Aaron Florida Marlins 1 Luis Castillo
Giants lead again, eh? Kind of surprising they haven't won more championships. I might have guessed that the Cardinals would lead but they're just tied for third (with 6 other teams.)
I also thought that maybe the Red Sox wouldn't even appear on here, but they do have tow such players in Harry Hooper and Tris Speaker. Of course, the last time either one of them stole a base for Boston was in 1920.
Looking at a different style of play, at least 50 career sacrifice hits since 1950:
Franchise Number Players Matching +---------------------------------+------+-----------------------------------------+ Los Angeles Dodgers 9 Brett Butler / Willie Davis / Ron Fairly / Jim Gilliam / Davey Lopes / Wes Parker / Bill Russell / Mike Scioscia / Maury Wills Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 6 Bob Boone / Rod Carew / Gary DiSarcina / Jim Fregosi / Bobby Grich / Dick Schofield Atlanta Braves 6 Glenn Hubbard / Mark Lemke / Johnny Logan / Felix Millan / Rafael Ramirez / Jerry Royster Boston Red Sox 6 Marty Barrett / Rick Burleson / Dwight Evans / Jim Piersall / Jody Reed / Jerry Remy Milwaukee Brewers 6 Jim Gantner / Paul Molitor / Don Money / Charlie Moore / B.J. Surhoff / Robin Yount New York Yankees 6 Derek Jeter / Tony Kubek / Gil McDougald / Willie Randolph / Bobby Richardson / Roy White San Francisco Giants 6 Alvin Dark / Jim Davenport / Tito Fuentes / Hal Lanier / Johnnie LeMaster / Robby Thompson Baltimore Orioles 5 Brady Anderson / Mark Belanger / Paul Blair / Rick Dempsey / Brooks Robinson Chicago White Sox 5 Luis Aparicio / Nellie Fox / Ozzie Guillen / Jim Landis / Minnie Minoso Cincinnati Reds 5 Dave Concepcion / Barry Larkin / Roy McMillan / Ron Oester / Johnny Temple Detroit Tigers 5 Tom Brookens / Aurelio Rodriguez / Alan Trammell / Don Wert / Lou Whitaker Minnesota Twins 5 Rod Carew / Greg Gagne / Cristian Guzman / Roy Smalley / Cesar Tovar Pittsburgh Pirates 5 Gene Alley / Jay Bell / Dick Groat / Bill Mazeroski / Jack Wilson Cleveland Indians 4 Larry Brown / Duane Kuiper / Rick Manning / Omar Vizquel Houston Astros 4 Craig Biggio / Roger Metzger / Terry Puhl / Craig Reynolds Oakland Athletics 4 Bert Campaneris / Dick Green / Dwayne Murphy / Joe Rudi Philadelphia Phillies 4 Larry Bowa / Clay Dalrymple / Cookie Rojas / Tony Taylor Chicago Cubs 3 Glenn Beckert / Ivan DeJesus / Don Kessinger Kansas City Royals 3 Freddie Patek / Frank White / Willie Wilson St. Louis Cardinals 3 Curt Flood / Julian Javier / Ozzie Smith New York Mets 2 Bud Harrelson / Rey Ordonez Seattle Mariners 2 Harold Reynolds / Dan Wilson Texas Rangers 2 Toby Harrah / Jim Sundberg Toronto Blue Jays 2 Alex Gonzalez / Alfredo Griffin Florida Marlins 1 Luis Castillo
And finally, because I wanted to find a way of making a meaningful list on which the Tampa Bay Devil Rays appear, most players by team with at least 70 career triples:
Franchise Number Players Matching +---------------------------------+------+-----------------------------------------+ Chicago Cubs 4 Ernie Banks / Don Kessinger / Ryne Sandberg / Billy Williams Philadelphia Phillies 4 Larry Bowa / Johnny Callison / Jimmy Rollins / Juan Samuel Atlanta Braves 3 Hank Aaron / Bill Bruton / Eddie Mathews Chicago White Sox 3 Nellie Fox / Lance Johnson / Minnie Minoso Cincinnati Reds 3 Barry Larkin / Vada Pinson / Pete Rose Boston Red Sox 2 Dwight Evans / Jim Rice Detroit Tigers 2 Al Kaline / Dick McAuliffe Kansas City Royals 2 George Brett / Willie Wilson Los Angeles Dodgers 2 Willie Davis / Jim Gilliam Milwaukee Brewers 2 Paul Molitor / Robin Yount Pittsburgh Pirates 2 Roberto Clemente / Bill Virdon St. Louis Cardinals 2 Lou Brock / Willie McGee Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 1 Jim Fregosi Houston Astros 1 Jose Cruz Minnesota Twins 1 Rod Carew New York Yankees 1 Mickey Mantle Oakland Athletics 1 Bert Campaneris San Diego Padres 1 Tony Gwynn San Francisco Giants 1 Willie Mays Tampa Bay Devil Rays 1 Carl Crawford Toronto Blue Jays 1 Tony Fernandez Washington Nationals 1 Tim Raines

NICE!
I like this a lot. Please note that the White Sox have the fewest guys over 50 homers among all the Original 16.

Unless I misunsterstand, this can't be right.
Toronto only has 4 players ???
What about Jesse Barfield ?
August 26th, 2007 at 11:29 am
Sorry, now I see its only up to 1979.

Do these kinds of searches not work for pitchers? Or am I just unable to properly form the query? How would you do a similar search for pitchers; say, for strike-outs?
August 27th, 2007 at 5:41 pm
I can't get it to work for pitchers either, and for hitters certain stats don't work (such as career BA or OPS+). I'll ask Sean about it.
August 27th, 2007 at 6:29 pm
Oh, and Bruce Bochte only makes the 50HR cut for the M's if you include 1980-1982.
August 29th, 2007 at 11:36 am
The magic baseball gurus have fixed the searches for pitchers and for the other stats such as BA and OPS.
OK, it was Sean who fixed them.
