Tying and go-ahead sac flies in the same W.S. inning

Posted by John Autin on October 21, 2011

The top of the 9th inning in game 2 was just the 2nd time in World Series history that a team got a tying sacrifice fly and a go-ahead sac fly in the same inning (according to the B-R Event Finder).

The other was game 1 of the 1930 Series, sac flies in the 3rd inning by the Cardinals' Taylor Douthit and Sparky Adams, off of Lefty Grove. The Cards got no other runs off Grove and wound up losing that game, and lost the Series 4-2 to the Athletics.

Here are all the other tying or go-ahead sac flies in the WS:

  1. Timothy P. Says:

This is looking like it's going to be a fantastic World Series! When the Cards scored the first run there was a sense that another title was on it's way to StL. The Cards are playing with a great deal of confidence, similar to the last time they won the WS under LaRussa. Texas really was lucky to sneak out with a win. I think this one goes 7 and will be a great one.

  2. Johnny Twisto Says:

Timmy, it seems as if you dislike the Brewers more than the Cards. If so, that seems unusual for a Cubs fan.

ALSO: What is your reaction to the (apparent) hiring of Kid Theo? Perhaps you'll need to wait and see how he gets his steaks prepared.

FURTHERMORE: I am upset I missed this game tonight, sounds like a good one. Alas.

  3. Timothy P. Says:

@2 Ever heard the story George Will tells about growing up half way between St. Louis and Chicago? He became a Cubs fan for whatever reason and has long suffered while the Cardinals had many great years. St. Louis is a funny town, baseball is king in St. Louis. St. Louis, Boston, and New York might be the only cities that the baseball teams easily eclipse the football teams, although I suppose technically there is no pro football in NY or Boston, but you get the point. Growing up in Wahoo and Boy Town, there were a ton of Cardinal fans in Nebraska, but once I heard the excited booming slurred voice of Harry Caray shouting at me on cable I was hooked on the Cubs. The Brewers I look down on because I got arrested in Milwaukee.

  4. Johnny Twisto Says:

To be fair, the Chicago PD arrests most people they find pantless as well.

    I think.

  5. Evil Squirrel Says:

There has never been professional football in St. Louis either, well, except for those weird years around the turn of the century, but it was just a passing fad....

BTW, you two crack me up... though I am easily amused....

  6. Dark Says:

Hmm, Merkle got a GW sac-fly. Guess it didn't make up for his mistake.

  7. Timothy P. Says:

Please take a look at this picture I have linked below and tell me if Bobby Richardson looks like he is about 5' tall.

  8. Doug Says:

    Series-winning walk-off sac-fly in 1912, and off of Christy Mathewson !

Craig Counsell ties up game 7 in 1997 in 9th inning sac-fly, then scores winning run in the 11th.

Tonight's sac-fly with the score tied in the top of the 9th - first time ever in that situation (although twice before in top of the 10th).

On the broadcast I was watching, Rick Sutcliffe was all over TLR for taking out Motte in a situation where the Cards need a strikeout against a Josh Hamilton who's in a funk. Arthur Rhodes is not the guy to get the K, and Motte is. I king of agree with Sutcliffe.

  9. Nash Bruce Says:

@4JT: Too cold in Milwaukee to be going pantless.

  10. Dvd Avins Says:

@7 No, he looks about 4'8" and African-American. Very strange picture.

  11. groundball Says:

@8 Yes, I too say TLR pulled a WTF? But, I cant really expect anything different from LaRussa, he does like his crazy pitching changes.

  12. John Autin Says:

@7 -- It's hard to believe that picture wasn't doctored, or taken with a distorting lens.

The picture where he's holding the bat like a microphone is sort of disturbing:

  13. John Autin Says:

Re: bringing in Rhodes to face Hamilton -- If they were going to pitch to Hamilton, I thought it was the right move.

Motte has an enormous platoon split for his career: .188 BA vs. RHB, ..284 vs. LHB (.162/.270 this year). His career K% against lefties is an ordinary 20% (18% this year).

And of course, Hamilton also has a large platoon split: .322 BA vs. RHP, .278 vs. LHP career (.314/.260 this year). K%, 16.5% vs. RHP, 22.1% vs. LHP career.

Hamilton's injury has sapped his power, but he's still hitting .250 this postseason and not striking out a lot, 6 Ks in 53 PAs.

I would not have let Motte pitch to Hamilton.

  14. John Autin Says:

@4, JT -- Didn't Richard Daley say that "the policeman isn't there to create pantlessness; the policeman is there to preserve pantlessness"?

  15. Johnny Twisto Says:

That sounds right. If I remember correctly, that was just before Abe Ribicoff suggested the CPD wouldn't be so upset about their ill-fitting uniform pants if they would just visit George McGovern's tailor.

  16. Timothy P. Says:

@10 It's a very strange picture. @9The Brewers close the roof when it rains, or it's cold. @15 The late Mayor Daly would have known how to handle the current problems on Wall Street.

  17. topper009 Says:

Sorry you got pinched in Milwaukee Timmy, but you must have been drunk to the point of being unconscious which is about the time when you start to stand out as being much more drunk than everyone else.

In a spot where Hamilton just needed to put the ball in play, I would have stuck with Motte and his 99 mph stuff. Also, after Hamilton's AB I think I would have walked Young to setup the double play.

  18. Erik102787 Says:

Well, who can name the most famous one on that list???

  19. TheGoof Says:

Waite Hoyt gave up SIX of these.

  20. eorns Says:

I thought Gene Larkin's 1991 Series winner be there but apparently his ball was not caught because of a drawn-in outfield.

I saw four go-ahead/tying sacrifice flies listed for the 1927 World Series and thought, "Wait, didn't the Yankees win all those games with 500-foot homers?" Fitting that three of those SFs were by the Pirates. Clyde Barnhart's Game 2 sac fly gave Pittsburgh a 1-0 first-inning lead, which they held till the top of the third. The only other lead the Pirates had in that World Series was 1-0 in the top of the first of Game 4 on a Glenn Wright single. The Yankees promptly tied the game in the bottom of the first and cruised on to the sweep.

just the 2nd time in World Series history that a team got a tying sacrifice fly and a go-ahead sac fly in the same inning . . . [t]he other was game 1 of the 1930 Series, sac flies in the 3rd inning by the Cardinals' Taylor Douthit and Sparky Adams, off . . . Lefty Grove.

The trivia fiend in me is certain that I am a better person for knowing this. Great topic, John!

10-15-69 Brooks Robinson...if Swoboda misses that ball, who knows what would have happened the rest of the Series. Miracle Mets, indeed!

@21, Kahuna T -- Thanks! I always feel I've accomplished something when I find an excuse to drop Taylor Douthit's name. How many guys have put together a season like his 1930 -- 201 hits, 109 runs, 93 RBI, .303 BA, 41 doubles, 10 triples, 283 Total Bases -- and had it add up to an 87 OPS+?

I wouldn't wish anyone to be unjustly incarcerated. I was at the mercy a heavy set, deep voiced woman with a badge. She spoke with the unmistakable twang associated with trailer courts built on a flood plain near a river that used to be an anti-freeze factory. County jail guards, one small step above TSA agent.

Agreed! You're right that that 87 OPS+ looks too low. The 1930 NL was the richest run-scoring environment for any major league since 1900 — 5.68 runs per team per game, just a tad ahead of the 1936 AL (5.67 R/G). A player in the 1930 NL couldn't hope to have an OPS+ over 100 unless his raw OPS was somewhere north of .800. I seem to recall that the 1930 NL aggregate batting average was above .300. The league opted to tone down the liveliness of the baseballs during the following offseason.

I've never heard Douthit's last name pronounced. I like to think it was said as "Doubt it," which would have made our man the Alibi Ike of position players, a guy with a built-in excuse for every out.

Not on this list was the 2-run SF in 1982. Tom Herr of the Cardinals flied to deep center scoring Ozzie Smith and Willie McGee to make a 1-0 Cardinal lead 3-0 in the top of the 2nd in game 4. The Brew Crew got 6 in the 7th to win the game.

Kahuna Tuna, The 1930 NL BA was .303 for the entire league, .308 if take out the pitchers. As you stated, we have to take a whole lot of air out of seasons like this, 1894-1895,1936 AL, and a few others, to compare fairly players from other less offensively-inflated seasons. Plenty of seasons like Douthit's 1930 look great until you start adjusting them down.

If you want to have some real time-wasting fun, take the regular-season batting stats for the 1930 NL or 1894 NL, arrange them by OPS+, and see how many superficially impressive battter seasons have an OPS+ below 100.
