MLB Network: The Stat Story, Sept. 18, 10pm ET
Posted by Neil Paine on September 6, 2011
A heads-up for anyone who didn't see this note at Stathead or BBTF... At 10 p.m. on 9/18, MLB Network is running a special Behind The Seams called "The Stat Story" -- a documentary (narrated by Bob Costas) about the history of sabermetrics, as well as its spread into front offices over the past few decades.

Will Costas be in-studio, or was it taped in his mom's basement?

I wish I still had MLB Network.

I hope Costas will take time to tell us the story about Bob Gibson and Pete Lacock.

I can't wait to see this. And since it is on The MLB Network, I should have no problem convincing my dad to watch it with me. The release will be a nice primer for when Moneyball hits theaters five days later.

One of my favorite Bob Costas story comes from when he was an announcer for the St. Louis Spirits of the ABA.
There is the legendary story about the Spirits getting ready to depart on a flight that left Louisville, Ky., at 8 p.m. and would get into St. Louis at 7:56 p.m. due to a time-zone change. Bob was standing with the players, who were all holding their traveling schedules. Marvin 'Bad News' Barnes sauntered up to Costas and pointing at his itinerary said, “I ain’t getting on no time machine."

Thomas, anyone who cites Loose Balls is all right in my book.
I wonder who Costas would say is the MLB version of Fly Williams.

I remember a couple of years ago when the promos and trailers were coming out for "The Bronx is Burning", and making sure the kids were in bed and the beer cold when the shows started.
It took about 20 minutes of the first episode to realize what a complete load of crap the series was going to be, and after watching the first and half of the second couldn't watch anymore because of the outright lies and fabrications.
Jesus, what's next for Costas after this..Dancing with the Stars?

All you have to is find a guy who's been in the show with no teeth and a felony robbery convinction on his record...

@5 ,@7 - Yes, the book "Loose Balls" by Terry Pluto is probably the definitive history of the ABA, as well as being as funny as the devil - highly recommended. I also like Costas' stories about Marvin "Bad News" Barnes.

Ed Delahanty? Jim Piersall? Nyjer Morgan? There may have been only one Fly Williams ...
No, wait, it's Carl Everett, right? Or Milton Bradley ...

So what you're saying is that we need to contact Ron LeFlore's dentist. Quite a Wednesday we've got going here . . . (-;þ
