Most games with an RBI, team’s first 10 games

Posted by Andy on April 10, 2009

Since 1954, nobody has ever had an RBI in each of his team's first 10 games, but several guys have had an RBI in at least 9 of the first 10:

Year Games Link to Individual Games
+-----------------+----+-----+-------------------------+
Dave Winfield 1988 9 Ind. Games
Brooks Robinson 1966 9 Ind. Games
Tony Oliva 1970 9 Ind. Games
Willie McCovey 1969 9 Ind. Games
Willie Mays 1964 9 Ind. Games
Bob Allison 1960 9 Ind. Games

Mays and Robinson lead the way with 18 total RBI over their game-10 stretches.

Joe Torre had the longest hitting streak to start the season, 22 games (for players playing all of their team's games). It was in his MVP season, 1971.

I also noticed that 1971 was his only year as a full-time player where he played only one position (3B). Coincidence?

I'm not sure how much it mattered that he played solely 3B and no 1B, but it's certainly no coincidence that that was the season he moved off catcher for good.
