It's an interesting list of names.

  1. Doug Says:

    I was about to post about what a surprise it was to see Tim McCarver on this list. Guess I just naturally assume catchers can't run.

    But, in Tim's case, it's not really a surprise. He had 57 triples in his career, and even led the league once (it wasn't a fluke - he had 13 of them in '66). McCarver also tripled at least once in 17 straight seasons, missing only in years he appeared in 10 or fewer games.

  2. Raphy Says:

    There are 2 other players with 2 career post-season triples:

  3. Steve Lombardi Says:

    Thanks - must have missed them

  4. John Autin Says:

    So, let's see ... per 162 postseason games, George Brett averaged 30 doubles, 19 triples and 38 HRs, 392 Total Bases.

    Nice.

  5. Lawrence Azrin Says:

    It's no surprise that a number of players on this list are from the dead-ball era, as some of the WS triples from that era were probably ground-rule triples hit into overflow crowds in the deep outfield.

    I recall that there were a number of these ground-rule triples hit in the first WS (1903) between the Americans (Collins, Dougherty, Freeman, Parent, Stahl) and the Pirates (Bransfield, Leach). All the players mentioned hit at least two triples. Anyone know the details?

    I am a bit surprised that top two triple-hitters all-time, Cobb and Crawford, only hit one triple combined, in 34 WS games total {small sample-size warnings apply}.

  6. Larry R. Says:

    @4

    And hit .337/.397/.627 with 1.023 OPS. In WS play it's .373/.439/.529/.968.

  7. Tmckelv Says:

    @4 JA,

    Being a Yankee fan that grew up in the 1970's I was WELL aware of Brett's postseason prowess. The guy was ridiculous. I was very happy for him in 1985, as he had played on many Royals teams that deserved to win the W.S.

    I know it is mostly forgotten now, given all the Red Sox vs. Yankees stuff, and the fact that the Royals have battled the salary disparity for a long time, but the 1976-1980 Yankees/Royals playoff rivalry was one of the greatest in baseball history.

  8. Evil Squirrel Says:

    I immediately thought of Mark Lemke when I saw the title of this post.....

  9. Jacob Says:

    @8, same here!

  10. TheIronHorse Says:

    @7 The image of Feddie Patek on the bench crying after Game 5 of the ALCS in 1977, I believe, still reasonates.

  11. Peter Crapo Says:

    @ 4 and 7... just watched "Best Collisions in MLB History on the mlb network last night... don't remember which game it was, bu Willie Randolph taken out at second by Frank White, I think, and Randolph and the runner wound up at least 10 feet to the 3rd base side of second base... and, amazingly, a double play was not called!

  12. Pebblyjack Says:

    It was Hal McRae. The next season, I think, they instituted the Hal McRae Rule making such take-outs an automatic double play.

  13. Gerry Says:

    @5 Baseball Digest, February 1990, page 79, article by Rich Marazzi, The Baseball Rules Corner, confirms the ground-rule triple for balls hit into the overflow crowd at Exhibition Park in Pittsburgh. It's also confirmed on page 38 of Dom Forker's book, Baseball Brain Teasers.

  14. Lawrence Azrin Says:

    @13/ Gerry - Thanks. Do you know what the ground rules where, for balls hit into the overflow crowds in the outfield in the Huntington Avenue ballpark in Boston?

  15. Timmy p Says:

    Wahoo Sam and Cobb didn't play many post season games.
