Sergio Santos & consecutive appearances with a strikeout

Posted by Andy on July 21, 2011

Going into last night's games, here are the longest streaks in 2011 where the pitcher recorded at least one strikeout in each appearance:

Now, what happened last night? Sergio Santos came in and threw a wild pitch, allowing the winning run to score. He threw 4 pitches to Billy Butler but the game ended before the plate appearance ended, and he didn't register a strikeout. Streak over.

It would be interesting to see the list for consecutive appearances in relief with a strikeout.

Forgive my tangent ... When I do a B-R name search on "Sergio", I get 7 MLB players with the first name Sergio, and Milt Pappas. Here is every piece of name info I can find for Pappas on B-R:

-- Full legal name is Milton Stephen Pappas.
    -- Nickname was Gimpy.
-- Born with last name Pappastediodis.

There's not a whisper of a hint of a clue why Pappas turns up in a "Sergio" search. But when I googled "Milt Pappas + Sergio", I found a single site with both terms in a related sense: Turns out, his Greek middle name was Sergios.

I wonder where on B-R that fact is contained.

  3. John Autin Says:

Well, never mind; I'm an idiot. "Sergios" appears at the bottom of his player page, under "Names and misspellings."

  4. Andy Says:

Pappas comes up because at the bottom of the page Sean included this:

Name and misspellings: Miltiades Milton Gimpy Milt Sergios Stephen Pappas

All players have this at the bottom of their page. Sergio brings up Sergios since the search does autocompletion. Pappas' birth name was Miltiades Sergios Pappastediodis.

I take some solace from having self-corrected....

Anyway ... That's a funny story about Santos, Andy. And thinking of the Butler AB as a "strikeout, interrupted" somehow reminds me of the apocryphal tale about Josh Gibson winning a home game with a mammoth blow that disappeared into the void. The next day, in another town (as the story goes), Gibson was at bat when a ball mysteriously dropped from the sky into a fielder's glove, and the umpire barked: "Yer out! -- yesterday, in Pittsburgh!"

In the hope of contributing something besides my inane tangent:

@1, Dan -- Here are the longest relief streaks from 2001-present with at least 1 SO. Eric Gagne tops the list with 35 games (and 60 total Ks).

The longest such streak in the previous decade was 28 by Ugueth Urbina; in the decade before that, Jeff Montgomery with 32.

I'm going to stop there, since search streaks are time-consuming and the last 20 years represent the peak of MLB strikeout rates. I would bet that Gagne holds the all-time record.

Also noteworthy: In 1981, Mark Clear had a 25-game K streak with 70 total Ks.

  7. Charles Says:

Bruce Sutter had 39 in 1977

  8. John Autin Says:

I guess it's just not my day. 🙂

  9. Evan Says:

Santos recorded a -0.366 WPA in a 0 BF game because of the game ending wild pitch.
