There's some "brand" names on this list - as well as some not so well known.  In any event, it's only happened 4 times since 1980.  Probably because of the way bullpen use has changed post-1970's.

  1. kds Says:

The first 53 times this was done were all relief appearances, in 31 years, the last 12 were all starts, in 61+ years.

  2. Randy Says:

@1 - The "App, Dec" column is largely incomplete in this list. My guess is that this column is blank for all pre-1950 games, but I can't be sure. If you simply click on the box scores for some of the pre-1950 games, you will find that most of those were starts too (but not all).

  3. rogerbusby Says:

Considering the special circumstances that arose during the era I'm amazed that this didn't occur once during the WWII years.

  4. MB Says:

Wow how about Eddie Rommel's game. The crazy thing is, his 17 IP were all in relief.

38 base runners in 17 innings, not pretty.

  5. kds Says:

Randy, thanks for that, I should have thought of it.

@3, Remember that scoring went down during WWII. What might be interesting to look for; did pitcher usage change 1941-1945, and change back when the varsity returned in 1946?

  6. Spartan Bill Says:

I just looked at the Eddie Rommell game. A SS named Johnnie Burnett of Cleveland went 9 for 11 that day..

The Indians had 33 hits in the loss.

  7. thom-13 Says:

@1 @2 I went through the box scores for all these games and only two of them were relief appearance (May 18,1929, July 10, 1932). At least 50% appear to have been complete games. And as also can be seen a lot of the games were doubleheader games.

As I was going through, I thought it interesting that 6 of these individuals appeared twice. Lefty Gomez gave up 8 ER in the loss to George Blaeholder in 1932

  8. Doug Says:

No. 16 on the list (Ernie Wingard) is the lowest game score ever (6) for a complete game victory.

I love Pete Donohue (No. 4), getting a win with a game score of 1.

  9. Hartvig Says:

I saw a starting pitcher for the Quad Cities Angels give up 8 runs in the first 3 innings verses Cedar Rapids & wind up with the win back in the early 80's when they were an Angels franchise. I think I even scored the game but I can't find it and have no idea who it was.

  10. oneblankspace Says:

There was a story in Zane Grey's The Red-Headed Outfield that featured a pitcher who gave up 7 runs in the first inning and finished the game with a win. It was a different game back then...
