8 or More Total Bases in Consecutive Games, since 2006
Posted by John Autin on May 27, 2011
Carl Crawford became the 2nd hitter this year with consecutive games of at least 8 total bases, joining (no surprise) Jose Bautista. The table below shows the 33 such streaks in the last 5+ seasons. (The longest streaks in the last 20 years were 3 games, in 2003 and 2000; you could guess all day and probably not name these two guys. Answer below.)
Crawford had 4 hits each night, with a HR and two 2Bs Wednesday, and two 3Bs Thursday (just the 2nd & 3rd of the year for the active leader in three-baggers).
Bautista's streak on April 22-23 was 3-3 in each game, with HR-3B-2B the first game and 2 HRs the next. Slight difference in total WPA between these two streaks: .719 for Bautista, .164 for Crawford.
The last Red Sox hitter with 8+ TB back-to-back was David Ortiz, away back in 2003 (thus not on this list), his first year in Boston. Some of you will remember that event: Ortiz had 2 HRs in 2 straight blowout wins in Yankee Stadium.

On average five times a year- a little surprised it doesn't happen more. It seems like you could get 2 home runs in back to back games with a hot player more often, and then of course that's not the only way do it.
May 27th, 2011 at 10:46 pm
Well, you figure that hitting 2 home runs in one game is pretty hard to do, and doing so twice in a row is just statistically improbable. Half of the guys on the list needed to chip in some doubles or triples in addition to homering. That's obviously very hard to do, so about once every 5 or 6 weeks seems about right to me.

bautista doing it in only 6 AB

People on the list twice in the last five years
Jorge Posada, Carlos Beltran, Alfonso Soriano, ..... what is the common denominator of these hitters? Streaky? When you're hot you're hot?
Four different Carlos's on the list. Hmm.....

Since 2000, only Richard Hidalgo and Jeff DaVanon have done it 3 games in a row. (Jeff DaVanon? Really??) In 2000, he hit 2 HR in a game 3 games in a row. In a season where he hit 12 HR, total. Pretty remarkable.
May 28th, 2011 at 12:08 am
@5, Carl -- I was waiting for someone to notice that DaVanon hit 12 HRs that year, so you take the (imaginary) prize. In fact, those were the only multi-HR games of DaVanon's 528-game career.

@5
Carl, nice catch. Whodda thunk a fringe player could hit half of his season home runs in three consecutive games.
And two HR per game at that

Must've been the greatest week while he pondered whether he was going to become the next Babe Ruth.

Greatest week of his life.

From what I can tell, no one has done it 4 games in a row, and most of the guys who have done it 3 were power hitters.
Ruth was able to do it once, in '21.
One guy (don't remember who) did it only hitting 4 HR - a bunch of doubles and triples filled it out.

Add Corey Patterson (who's raking it!) to the list:
9 TB on Saturday:

8 TB on Sunday:

I hope he can continue to be productive until (or if) Snider is ready to return.

@11, BJSG -- I hate to be a wet blanket, but check your math on Corey's total base counts. According to the box scores on B-R, he had 8 TB on Saturday (4 singles, 1 HR) and 7 on Sunday (3 singles, 1 HR). Here's his game log for this year:

Mr. Autin:
You are absolutely correct. I counted the HR in both the HR and hits category.
