    Adrian Gonzalez didn't homer last night

  2. MikeD Says:

    I didn't see last night's game. Did he hit a HR, or am I misreading that headline.

  3. Andy Says:

    Oh yeah, I'm behind a day. Never mind!

  4. John Autin Says:

    It's too bad Gonzalez didn't HR last night. I'm sure the Red Sox would love for their franchise record of 5 straight games with a HR to be held by someone other than Jose Canseco....

    P.S. OK, alright -- that record is shared by George Scott, Dick Stuart, Ted Williams and Jimmie Foxx. The Williams streak featured 6 HRs in 11 AB (with 7 walks), including 1 as a pinch-hitter. In the game that ended the streak, Williams went 3 for 3 with 3 walks.

    Andy, can you think of any way to answer this question via the Play Index?

    "Has any batter ever homered 3 times in the same game against one reliever?"

    I was wondering that yesterday when Bautista came up against Slowey in the 8th, having already hit 2 HRs off Slowey. I can't think of any way to check it except brute force, and even I am not up for that much slogging.

    @5 I did some modified "brute force" work to find the most recent time it happened.

    I searched for games with Relievers... HR>=3; BF>=19 (figuring 19 is the min. batters faced to face the same batter 3 times) Then using excel, cross-referenced dates with players hitting 3+ HR and got this one from 2001.

    Mike Cameron hit 3 off Jim Parque in this game, although Parque did pitch 6 innings, and came in after only 0.1 innings from the starter.

    @5, Hysteria1978 -- Thanks for that slogging!

    7 HRs by Seattle in that game, 2 by the host White Sox -- yep, that was 2002 alright.
