Retiring Too Early?
Posted by Raphy on January 21, 2009
From 1994-1998 Roger Clemens was the second oldest pitcher to throw 1000 innings. Nevertheless, Clemens would continue pitching strong and over the next 5 years (1999-2003) he would once again pitch 1000 innings, this time as the oldest pitcher to do so (during that time period). Second to Clemens was a pitcher less than a year younger than Roger, Jamie Moyer. Amazingly enough, over the next five years Moyer would still be able to throw another 1000 innings, as he became the oldest to do it during that time frame. This seems to bode well for the number 2 man on the current list. Who was it? None other than Greg Maddux.

Of course Clemens started his second five year run at age 36, Moyer at 41. Maddux would be starting at 43. Maddux was the only pitcher on all three lists, although Mussina and Glavine came close to a trifecta in 2004-2008 (894 and 885.1 IP, respectively).
Derek Lowe might be a good bet for heading the list in 2009-2013, though.
