Biographical Information[edit]

Yadiel Hernández debuted for Matanzas in the Cuban Serie Nacional, hitting .328/.421/.514 as a regular in the outfield in 2009-2010. In 2010-2011, he batted .329/.431/.469 as Matanzas's main left fielder. He hit .330/.478/.529 with 23 doubles, 6 triples, 80 walks, 66 runs and 67 RBI in 95 games in 2011-2012; he tied for 7th in the league in doubles, tied for 6th in triples and was third in walks (behind Alfredo Despaigne and Alexander Malleta). He made the Cuban national team roster for the 2013 World Baseball Classic.

He defected in 2015 and signed with the Washington Nationals on October 1, 2016. He started playing in organized baseball in 2017, with the Harrisburg Senators, where he hit .292/.379/.441 in 120 games. In 2019, he hit 33 homers for the Fresno Grizzlies in spite of his small size, placing him 7th in the Pacific Coast League, 5 behind leader Kevin Cron. He made his major league debut as a pinch-runner for the Nationals on September 10, 2020, by which time he was already 32.
